Root New to Rooting

This is my first time rooting an Incredible, how do I root it and what are good roms to put on and how do I put them on? I know how to root an Eris so if there's any similarity that would help.

There is a ton of info on this forum about that if you'll look for it.
I'll try to get you started in the right direction.

The best thread on rooting the Incredible that I've seen (and the one I personally used to root mine) is this one:

There are a lot of roms available for the Incredible. Which one is "best" is a matter of personal preference. Do you like Sense, or not? Do you like Froyo, or do you prefer Gingerbread? Do you want a rom with tons of whistles and bells, that might not be super-stable. Or do you prefer a no-frills rom that is rock-solid for daily use?

Here is a list of the most popular roms for the Incredible.

Hope this helps.

I tried this but it didn't work.

Some people might remember the difficulty I had rooting my dinc. There is an alternative if your havering trouble with unrevoked. Download z4root use the temp root. Download unrevoked forever zip.Download rom manager and flash clockwork mod, you will want to do this multiple times, it took me 20 times , boot into recovery and flash the unrevoked zip. once it finishes Reboot into hboot and look at the top to see if you have s-off.if so your set. Reboot flash the rom of you choic. This DOES work. And as always I'm not responsible if you destroy you phone or if you burn down your house while attempting this.

Details are needed to help solve your problem because unrevoked is the simplest and easiest way to root your phone. I used it one time and it worked fine for me. Now I'm using several roms which is pretty cool.

Same here.

I came from the Eris which was unbelievably easy to root, so I was a little intimidated by the Incredible when it came to rooting. But I tried the method in the thread I linked, and it worked the first time. I've flashed a few roms since then, never had any problems.

I remember!

Is there a rooting process that is more hands on - rather than the one click method of unrEVOked. I bought a droid Eris just for this purpose.

im a little confused also... do you want a more involved root for the incredible? or for the eris?

Well if I'm going to get my hands dirty I'd start with the Eris to be safe. I bought an Eris for $30 with a cracked screen. I want to replace the digitizer and also tinker more extensively with software. So I should head over to their forums. But, if you know a guide that explains the more in depth mechanics and methods of rooting an incredible - i'd like to check that out too. The process must be some-what similar for the two phones right? Same developer, same carrier, similar specs...

I am simply interested in knowing more about what's going on during the rooting process. Rather than one-click-and-done "this was a triumph" way of unrEVOked3.

The Inc and Eris use totally different methods to root.

I can give you some links later,if no one does. If you ask on the Eris forum,it will prolly be a matter of minutes before doogald and/or scary alien have some answers for you :D

Really? Even though it's the same Operating System and same developer? Why would they be very different?

When the Eris comes in, or shortly beforehand, I'll definitely head over for more details.

Well, they are completely different hardware running different firmware and different sense versions. Not exactly apples and apples. ;)

There are acually several different ways you could root the Eris. The important thing to keep in mind is that clockworkmod.recovery and ROM manager are not reccomended to use with the Eris,so if you use a method that doesn't leave you with a recovery,or leaves you with clockwork, you'll quickly want to replace it with scary aliens "tracball opional" version of amon_ra recovery.
