New to rooting

i just upgraded my phone from android 2.3.4 to android 4.0.3 stock yesterday and i dont like it at all and i have a few questions. If i root my phone and install a custom rom will i be able to downgrade the software? and also is there a special way i have to root my phone if it is on android 4.0.3

ok well i rooted it and installed a custom rom but now when i try to sync my contacts i synced with gmail, they are not showing up. is there anything i can do that will make them show up ?

Just to make sure, you have verified that when you log into gmail on a PC or Mac, that the contacts are there, that you have registered the phone to the same gmail account and that you have an active data connection?
