Root New to rooting

Hey guys, I want to root my Evo 4G. I've spent all morning reading and reading and reading all I can.

One thing I'm not clear about. Do I need a new kernel if I use the "strike" rom? And if I do...which is best?

Thanks!

Welcome to AF!
That rom should come with its own kernel, as most, if not all custom roms come with a kernel.
You should be good to go and you can switch kernels later if you desire.!:)

GREAT! Thanks! Didn't know that. Thanks for the help! Well...time to dive into this...

Oh...if I root using the HTDdev method...can I download apps (like a back up app) before installing a new rom or before doing anything else?

As in, some kind of app to backup your apps? Yes, Titanium backup...I highly recommend the "pro" version....it's worth the money.
As far as saving apps before rooting, the guide suggests my backup pro or something like that.
Or, your apps should be saved in your google account and just redownload them but you will lose any data saved with those apps.
But after rooting--Titanium backup!:)
Do I follow your question correctly?

Yep. Perfect. Thanks!

The pro version is one of the handful of apps that you should spend a few dollars on. The biggest advantage will be resorting apps in batches vs one at a time. An added note is to restore only user apps and not system. User apps will be the ones you see and use on your phone....system are basically the ones behind the scenes.

Good point biker...there is alot more TB can do..I even set a automatic backup schedule to backup apps every Friday.
The list goes on.
Like biker said, I dont backup or restore system apps...leave them alone. Not even sure why that is an option:confused: Must be good for something?

I do the same with the automatic backup, but I have to also remember to set the schedule back up if I flash a new rom....bad memory on my part!

I think it's also a good idea to keep a recent copy of TB from you phone backed up on your PC.

Well I was so close to making the root jump. The HTCdev site won't let me log in. Just registered today, and clicked the link I got in my email but it doesn't recognize me.

The HTCdev site is still not recognizing my registration from yesterday. Frustrating! Just want to get this done.

Can you not login? What error is it giving you?

I can't log in. If I try to re-register it says my username is in use, so it's got me in the system. Screen shot:

As soon as I click the drop down menu for devices I have to log in before it goes any further.

Tried different Safari and Chrome browsers and get the same result. I did read in another thread that someone else is having the same issue as I am. Something about HTC doing site maintenance for 24-48 hours. So if that's true maybe I'll get in sometime today.

Ah, gotcha, ok, let us know how it goes eh?:)

Another question...I know I'm full of questions....how long does the rooting process usually take from start to finish?
