Root New to rooting

I bought My Backup Pro before I started this rooting. It's been a life saver to restore my SMS and everything else.

Just so I'm clear on this...when I go into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache I pick that wipe zip from the card right? After I press the power button to confirm I will be able to choose those 2 options right?

I don't want to wipe everything and have to restore all my contacts, data, apps again. That's very time consuming.

Are you talking about wiping before a rom flash?

Kinda. I'm getting a lot of lag on the pop up menus (system settings, ringtones, etc). After I click my selection the menu stays on the screen for 10 or 15 seconds.

OCN mentioned wiping the dalvik cache and cache to clear it up.

Gotcha,
yeah, just wipe those in recovery....no need to use the .zip file.
Wiping dalvik cache and cache will not wipe any data, apps, etc....you wont lose any thing.:)

I think I know the answer to this but each time I flash a new rom on the phone will I have to restore all my apps, contacts, settings, etc?

Basically, yes.
Contacts stored on your google account will come back after you sign in.
Settings will need to be re-configured.
Apps, yes, but can be saved prior via Titanium Backup or I think you said you have My Backup (not familiar with My Backup tho)
Thats one of the reasons I do not flash much, I hate setting everything up to my liking again.
I will usually make a nandroid backup first, flash an interesting rom, and setup minimal stuff to see if I like rom first....if I dont like it, I restore my nand.
If I do like it, I continue to set up things.:)

Sounds like My Backup operates similarly. It restores all my apps and data....just takes a while.

strike ICS.

The menu lag issue is still there after wiping cache too.

Sorry for the delayed reply...at work now and I float to and from my desk.
I am not familiar with that rom but did you have to flash a separate gapps package or was it baked into the rom?
Also, how many apps are force closing, or what exactly is the error message?
Also, did you wipe all 3 times before flashing the rom?

I wiped everything 1x before flashing the rom. Then wiped the dalvik cache, cache, and data 1x each. Then flashed the rom.

Just this morning I again wiped dalvik cache, cache, and data.

I'm not seeing the force close msg anymore so maybe that problem fixed it self. I dont know if the pkg was baked into the rom or not to be honest. I haven't (yet) flashed a separate gapps pkg either.

I just looked at the op for the Strike rom....I would assume gapps, if any, are baked in so,
I personally wipe manually, in recovery,
Data, cache, dalvik, system, boot, and anything else EXCEPT sd card 3 times.
You may have used the superwipe.zip also, which is fine as that will wipe stuff (not sure what) 3 times itself....but I dont like using a .zip to wipe...that's just me tho.
Perhaps your wipe of caches fixed the force close issue. Your wipe of data probably wiped your apps/contacts etc....don't need to wipe data unless you are going to flash a rom.
If you ever have issues in the future, just wipe cache and dalvik...usually will fix most issues.
As far as your lag goes, is that any better?

Lag is still there with the menus. Everything else is fine. But the menus just stay on screen after you select the option for way longer than they should.

Well, I would let it ride a couple more days for the rom/kernel to settle down.
Unless it's very annoying, flash another rom :)
If it still lags after a few days, either reflash rom, or we can try something else.;)

Fair enough. Everything else is working great. I royally screwed up my contacts when I backed them up and had like 8 of every contact entry! So I've been spending all morning getting that back in order.

ICS is way different than Gingerbread was....so I'm still poking around getting used to everything.

Haven't tried ICS yet...:p
Are your contacts backed up with your google account??

I don't think you're going to see those missing items on a ICS rom for our evo's. I don't use the ffc or Netflix so it's ok for me and 4g for me is just in a few spots so I don't miss it. The voice recognition and exchange email for work are superior on ICS so I've been using that instrad of Deck's for now.

I tried Papa's, but it had a few issues that nagged at me a bit so I replaced it with Strike. If he has a new revision coming I'll give it a shot.

HA...I prefer to have everything working such as ffc, nexflix, 4g (I have 4g in my area) ya know.?
Really waiting for PapaSmurf's cm9 update to try his rom....it looks nice.:)

I'd like to have the ffc back but that's not a big deal to me. We've got 4G here too but I never use it. It just kills my battery. I use wifi whenever possible, seems to give me the best battery life.

Yes, use WiFi whenever possible. Not only does it save you tonz of battery, but it saves data (sprints unlimited, but still a good habit to get into)

I'm finding a few bugs on this Strike rom that bother me. First, the lag is still there after 2 or 3 days. That's more annoying that anything else. But, the big thing is it doesn't rotate to landscape when I turn the phone sideways. So, pics and videos are pretty lame.

I do like ICS though. It's pretty slick. I really like the editing features in the camera app.

Might have flash a new rom or two on Monday.
