New to Tasker

d13g087

Newbie
Hey guys I'm new to tasker and I love the concept of it and jumped right in but when it came to doing stuff I was completely useless...lol can someone please tell me how I would be able to setup this option.

I'd like it to have a password whenever it is not in a "safe location" whether I put it so my safe locations are set up by wifi connection or GPS I don't care. I'd just like it so when I'm at home or my girlfriends house I don't have to be bothered to put my pw in. But when I bring it to school that my password is automatically setup without me having to worry as much.

Also, I'd like to have all my updates happen at a certain time frame. Idk if I can do this without Tasker anyways. But I'd like the updates to happen as I'm sleeping obviously like roughly between 4am-6am.

Thanks guys

No problem. Unfortunately it doesnt work for me on ym Nexus 4, i've been struggling with it for ages without a solution :(

I've got a similar solution working without issue on my N4. Do you know where yours is getting hung up?

When I install as per the link above, it works only on the 1st time it connects to my wifi. Every time after, the keyguard comes back on

I wonder if having two profiles with inverted conditions (that is "connected" and "not connected") could be causing some issues.

I use a "Device Boot" profile which sets the PIN. This makes sure that enabling the lockscreen is one of the first things done once the phone has finished booting in case it has wandered a bit too far from hom.

I then have a "Wifi Connected" profile that checks for a connection to a defined SSID and clears the PIN; it has an Exit task which sets the PIN again when I've disconnected.

Simplifying the profile(s) may help to troubleshoot as well.

I'd gladly post some screenshots or more details about my profiles, but they are a bit more complicated (as I also disable the lockscreen when my Pebble is connected). Let me know if you'd like to see them though :)

so my lock works just fine as of now. Now I'm going over my girlfriends house on Friday and plan on setting up another profile the same exact way I did at my house. Do you think that will keep my device locked all the time since it will only be in a secure location in 1 setting, or since I am in a secure location it will over ride the other profile from locking my device? Regardless I'll let you guys know what happens

You won't need to create another profile. Just add the ssid of girlfriends network to your existing profile (you can have as many as you like)

I'd appreciate if you could post yours. My setup is like you describe, but works weirdly.

The first time it connects to the wifi it works fine. Its the times after that it either wont work at all, or the keyguard gets enabled (when it should be the pin). In the security settings of the phone I've turned it to none, so secure settings is the only thing controlling the pin number.

I bought this app before, which had a similar problem. The app creator said this was all a problem with nexus phones. I've seen that you run paranoid android from other posts, im stock but rooted, could this be a stock problem?

I'm actually currently using TimePIN in lieu of Secure Settings, but the configuration was about the same either way.

Profile: Wifi Unlock
Context:
• Wifi Connected:
- SSID: SSID1/SSID2/SSID3
Enter Task:
• TimePIN
- Configuration: Disable All
(Or, for Secure Settings: Clear Password)
• Variable Set
- %WifiUnlock To 1
Exit Task:
• TimePIN
- Configuration: TimePIN Enabled
(Or, for Secure Settings: Set PIN)
- If %PebbleUnlock ! Set
• Variable Clear
- %WifiUnlock

Profile: Pebble Unlock
Context:
• Bluetooth Connected
- Name: Pebble XXXX
Enter Task:
• TimePIN
- Configuration: Disable All
(Or, for Secure Settings: Clear Password)
• Variable Set
- %PebbleUnlock to 1
Exit Task:
• TimePIN
- Configuration: TimePIN Enabled
(Or, for Secure Settings: Set PIN)
- If %WifiUnlock ! Set
• Variable Clear
- %PebbleUnlock

Of course you'll need to be sure that both Tasker and your plugin of choice are both added as Device Administrators. Let me know if you have any questions :)

I had the same set of profiles configured before PA started pushing out KK betas, and it worked fine on stock + rooted + busyboxed 4.4 (root shouldn't be required for setting/unsetting the PIN, but I figured I'd include that detail just in case).

Alternatively, you may want to try out this app: SkipLock

I used its predecessor (Wifi Unlock) at one point and found that it worked pretty well, maybe it can help you if Tasker isn't functioning correctly.

I've created the profile to match (secure settings, TimePin looks a little funky for me at the moment) as above.

I'm still having the same issues - first time changing it doesnt recognise and keyguard (randomly?) coming on.

I'm going to try a reboot to see what happens

Another idea may be to try uninstalling/reinstalling secure settings. Some Tasker plugins seem to be install-order dependent.

I've rebooted, reinstalled secure settings & rebooted again. Its almost working properly. Only issue I have is when I leave wifi and pin lock is meant to come on. First time of turning the screen on it doesn't engage pin lock, but second time it does & then stays on. I might be able to live with this. When I set the variable, do I need to tick any of the boxes?

Thanks for your help

I'm not sure why it wouldn't take on the first time the screen comes on after leaving wifi. Did you make sure to wait ~10 or so seconds after the wifi disconnected before trying the screen? It may be that the action just hasn't had time to execute for some reason.

You could also try experimenting with adding a Secure Settings: Lock Device or Secure Settings: Keyguard Enabled action after the Set PIN action (be sure to check for %WifiUnlock not set though).

An alternative approach may be to add a Screen On profile which sets the PIN if %WifiUnlock is not set.

Keep tinkering and you'll get it ;)

And no, you shouldn't need to tick any of the boxes on the Variable Set action.

I've just waited a few minutes and the pin number didnt engage, only on the 2nd attempt. I'll have a tinker like you suggest, thanks again :)

Adding the Lock Device in secure settings worked.

I've tried to expand the use of it, with mixed results. I've added a 2nd SSID and my car bluetooth. When I leave home my wifi is still connected when the bluetooth connects. I have my phone set to unlock and screen on for a BT connection. I've used the same variable, would I need to create a separate variable like %BTUnlock for the BT connection?

Also, I set the profile up on my work wifi at first then added my home later. When I reconnected to the work wifi this morning the keyguard came on for the 1st wake, so I'll have to play about with this some more.

Sweet!

Yeah, I'd recommend using a separate variable (like my %PebbleUnlock in the example I posted). This way you can make sure that the two profiles are able to function independently and without interfering with each other.

I know that Secure Settings has an option to require that the PIN/password be entered once before unlocking. Check just to make sure that option isn't enabled.

Secure settings definitely doesn't have this option ticked. I think I can live with this when on wifi. Its how it works in my car that is the main thing, as I want my phone to turn display on, unlock and load my music app. Im close to getting that working, so just need to tweak until it does.

Many thanks for all your help & patience :)

Curious: if your device is locked, then you connect to the wifi, turn it on and see that it is locked... if you turn it off and back on again does the lock go away? If so, you may be able to just add in two actions to turn the display off (Secure Settings: Lock Device) and back on again (Secure Settings: Wake Device).

When the device is locked, its pin locked. When it connects to wifi for the first time and I turn it on the keyguard gets enabled. The keyguard is turned off in android security settings and seems to be appearing from nowhere.

There's a warning in secure settings:lock device 'do not associate this with a display on (or similar) event. You will be locked out of your device.' Would this be relevant if I have a wake device to follow it, as it asks how long you want the screen to stay on for?

Ah, so you mean the slide-to-unlock lockscreen as opposed to the PIN? There is also a Secure Settings action to disable Keyguard; maybe give that a go?

I think that warning is to (hopefully) keep users from associating the Lock Device action to the Display On event context; in that case, the screen would immediately turn off each time you turned it on ;)

Using the Wake Device action after the Lock Device one should be fine though.
