Help New to the Evo!

I just wanted to come in and say hello. I just purchased 'my' 1st Android device today...the Evo of course. I'm pretty familiar w/ these forums as I spend a lot of time on the Hero section for my wife's phone. Eventually, I will work up enough nuts to root my Evo and tweak it just like I like it. Instead of trying to read thousands of opinions on rooting, I just wanted to see what your preferred method is. Also, are there any non-rooted apps I should grab that any of you recommend?

Also, is there a way I can have video calls with my two brothers who have the iPhone 4? I know they use an app called FaceTime or something like that. All of your thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Chris

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - There Will Be Root - Upd. 02.09.11 - xda-developers

this is what i used...for newer EVOs.. which yours should be.

i like it because it makes you do a few things... to learn and understand what each step does.
it also updates everything..
then it get you to install a custom ROM.

did you root the HERO? it needs to be.. and custom ROMed to make it great.

Thanks for the reply Dan! I'll check out the thread you posted. Is this method of rooting preferred over the 'Unrevoked' method? To answer your question, yes...I rooted my wife's phone a while ago and she loves it. It's running an AOSP ROM which is pretty darn fast!

That rooting method is fine, but make sure you understand all the steps. It's great for learning things, but it can also result in a brick if you don't know what you're doing. Just be careful. Unrevoked will work fine too.

Thanks Akazabam! Like I mentioned in my first post, I think I'm gonna wait until I feel the need to root my Evo. This thing is running lighting fast compared to my previous device.

the method I used is very safe and straight forward. rock solid.

I stay away from rom managers and clockwork.. have heard lots of issues... when it is automatic.. when it goes wrong, you have no idea where to fix it.

most issues are fixable..
only bricks i have really seen deal with radio updates... always make sure you understand what you are doing 100% plus when messing with radios. Dont stop or do battery pulls during radio updates.. even if it takes an hour for it to react!
