Help New to the Truimph, need some pointers.

I know I'm late to this phone, my excuse is that I've been hoping and wishing for the infamous "Optimus Black" to release in the US, but I finally cracked as I couldn't take anymore abuse from my Intercept of two years. I've known for some time about Triumph and it's shortcomings, and that's why I was hoping to skip over it.

*note: I am by all means a newbie, I play by the rules, don't know what rooting is or how to do it, but that's not necessarily what I'm asking about here.

- First issue I ran into on day one with the Triumph, no dictionary based auto-correct on the keyboard? What exactly do I do about that? Is there an app to fix that??

- Second issue, camcorder/camera app is kind of lousy. I've noticed it takes sometimes 10 seconds or longer to "load" the viewer, even though I really don't have much on there yet. I also dislike how the gallery works, I hate how both still shots and video are mixed together randomly and in one folder called "camera", unlike the Intercept's separate pictures and video folders. I see no way to organize or order anything. I go into the Gallery app and can't figure out how to create different folders. What do I do? Can I just get a better camcorder/camera app from the market? Any suggestions?

- GPS won't lock on. I know this is a common issue but for me it's not just 5 or 10 minutes, it seems like never. In fact, the only place it has ever seemed to manage is after I've been home for hours. That really gets me, the Intercept GPS function was fast, the one thing it did okay with. Any remotely easy fix here?

- Weather info is never available on the stock "Clock" app. I'm thinking this has to do with the GPS not functioning and finding my location? I would also assuming any app that used location info will not work, right?

- Youtube app problem - cannot find the add comment bar, usually found at the top of comments tab. What's up with that? Yes, I am logged in. I'm not seeing it, so I am unable to comment on a video.

- Where is the cheapest place to get a micro-HDMI out, and what do they run?

- Is there any app or fix out there that can enable the stand-by or media volume buttons to function as a snap photo button for the camera?

Thank you for any help/direction here.

Welcome to Android Forums and the Triumph area! :D

I use Swiftkey X for my keyboard (paid app) it has auto-correct and all that. I know there are free apps as well that have it.

I use QuickPic (free app), the standard android gallery is bad on all the phones I have used. Not a Triumph specific issue, IMO.

Outside of flashing a different ROM, not really. Some people will swear by GPS injector apps, but from all I know they don't work in any permanent manner.

I know you can set your location manually with certain apps (weatherbug, HD widgets, etc.). That is what I do. Some will also work off network location (your position based off which tower you are connected to).

- Youtube app problem - cannot find the add comment bar, usually found at the top of comments tab. What's up with that? Yes, I am logged in. I'm not seeing it, so I am unable to comment on a video.
I don't use youtbue much, sorry can't help you with this part. :(

Try checking out ebay. I got mine for like $6 with shipping.

- Is there any app or fix out there that can enable the stand-by or media volume buttons to function as a snap photo button for the camera?
I think this is possible with a button remapping app, but I don't know for sure, and I think you need to be rooted to do that. Without root access I would think the answer is no, but I might be wrong. http://lifehacker.com/5705224/buttonremapper-reassigns-your-android-phones-buttons

Hope I was helpful.

great answers, but what is the best ROM for GPS?
I am thinking of switching my OV to the Triumph, but I need GPS at all times in my car...
Thanks for everything

Welcome to the forums for you as well!

CM7 and MIUI both have tickerguy's GPS work in them. It is much better for some folks, others still have issues. I never had much of an issue with GPS, it would work alright as long as you didn't expect it to lock on instantaneously. Usually it is better on those ROMs for phones that have issues and can make a cold lock take less time to happen (usually within a minute or two or less when outside).

you really are going to hate this phone with the stock rom.

you dont have to root.

all you gotta do is replace the recovery with clockworkmod (SUPER SUPER EASY)

then backup the stock rom (ALSO EASY) and save it to your computer for the just in case situation.

then install CM7 (it is sooooo much better than the stock rom. no idea where to begin.. also its a update from android 2.2 to 2.3.7)

none of these require complex adb commands or anything weird like that.

do NOT worry about "rooting" the stock rom, just replace the recovery, then back up the stock rom as is, and never touch it again.

trust me, you dont know what your missing until you try a new rom.

besides, in a few weeks to a few months, the stock rom is going to log events and fill up internal storage. its a big bug in the stock rom that is showing up in the forums a lot lately from people who never upgraded to cm7.

you'd really be doing yourself a favor now. CM7 fixes almost every problem you have (except gps, but it WILL work a lot better than you see it now)

I would get a replacement phone since your gps doesn't lock on properly... But that's up to you. Flashing a rom may or may not help.

I like CM7 better, but I never hated the phone on stock. You are making some presumptions here based on your own preference. There are a lot of users that are fine using the stock ROM on this phone.

That never happened in the months I was on stock (before we had a CM7 ROM), It won't happen to everyone. The few people asking about it was the first I have heard of it in quite a while. Don't jump to conclusions.

I would try a ROM out first, it may fix it. Then you wouldn't have to hassle with a replacement.

Aside from better GPS functinality, I see dont see why cm7 is so must have. Im not big on fancy or custom GUIs so and i have no issue with the performance as is, other than the fact that Im still no good with a touch screen keyboard (takes me forever). If anything Id probably like to upgrade to stock 2.3 when possible.

Actually my GPS finally locked on today. I don't know why but after 5 minutes of sitting there doing nothing it finally did it. It always finds location fairly fast but has to search for GPS for several minutes. This is a vast improvement over the pretty much never locking time I had yesterday. Also my weather app is now giving me information if I give it at least a minute. Is it possible that my signal strength has somehow magically increased?

If these functions stay working as they are or improve I likely won't change anything, because again I don't see the appeal to a custom rom other than to improve the GPS functionality.

Still wish I knew what was going on with the Youtube app, and why I struggle so much with every keyboard, I'm actually a lot better off using the voice-to-text function.

I don't think your signal strength increased maybe there were more satellites overhead or something though... Or your gps needed to be broken in...

Getting used to a touchscreen keyboard takes some doing especially coming from using a physical keyboard, and the triumph doesn't exactly have a very good touchscreen so that doesn't help much. Also with no add comment bar on YouTube I would uninstall then reinstall from the market and see if that helps.

Maybe you've already done this, but make sure if you're trying to get a GPS lock, make sure you're outside. Others' experience may be different, but I find that, even on CM7, my GPS has trouble getting a lock inside, but locks within 30 seconds when I'm outside in my car.

Thought of another question I have. Why is it that Virgin only allows you to purchase insurance for the first 15? What difference does it make when you want to purchase it?

I didn't even know that you could only purchase it on the first 15... I think the insurance bought through them covers anything that happens to your phone, or near anything. I don't know for sure and if anyone else does feel free to explain better...

Yes, quickpic is way better than the stock gallery.

Though I prefer Swype as my keyboard. I love it on my MT.

You might also want to check out one called 8pen, it's pretty awesome. :D

And I am sure someone already said this, for the YouTube comments: in portrait, drag the info bar to the left.

There's also this other keyboard that I got as a free app of the day a while back and I just thought of it. Its pretty cool, but takes getting used to. Its called graffiti, there's a free version and a paid version. Basically you just draw the letters and it figures out what letter it is and puts it on the screen. Here's a link to the free version in the market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.access_company.graffiti&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hY2Nlc3NfY29tcGFueS5ncmFmZml0aSJd

IMO it is a cool idea, but in reality it isn't all that useful, but maybe to others. Also I just noticed that the Triumph isn't supported so maybe the thunderprop mod would have to be flashed (which you need a custom recovery for).

Welcome to the triumph

as for your user dictionary, it does not have one by default, it only has the names from your contacts, you can find a wide variety of different keyboards on the market as someone mentioned earlier, Swiftkey X, there is also a free one I used called gingerbread keyboard. That one has its own dictionary that you can add words to yourself. But swiftkey x has a built in auto guess which is pretty neat and handles faster typing much better from what I've seen.

Camera gallery issue, I really haven't been bothered by it too much so I never looked into it.

GPS it sure can be a pain, I have not rooted my phone and I have tried the gps injectors.. never worked for me. All I do is leave mine on if I know I'm going to be using it, because once it has a lock it is pretty fast

Weather - I would say its a GPS problem, but there are apps on the market that you can physically set your location and it will go off that vs your gps position, but if you're traveling it wouldn't update with your location unless you change it yourself

what i do i just dont check use gps satelites. and one thing ive noticed. the gps locks in on the triumph after the car or truck starts moving. i never have issues with gps.

Update: the GPS is working now. Day one it wouldnt lock on, day two it would lock in about 5 minutes, by now it locks usually in about 10 seconds. But, I still cant really get weather info ever. Doesnt make sense.

I thought the same thing, until I tried CM7 myself, and was an instant convert. Trust me, it is SO worth it.

Just a short list of what you get:
MUCH faster phone, quadrant scores 200+ points faster
MUCH better network performance
Much better battery life
I got better audio, and better GPS

It's so easy to do, and so easy to revert back from if for some reason you don't like it, that there is literally zero reason not to at least try it.
