Root New to this root business...

SO! I just got a Thunderbolt about a week ago. It's my second android, first was Droid Inc.

I've known of rooting but never found it necessary with my incredible. But with the thunderbolt there is a ridiculous amount of bloatware apps and I'd like to install 2.3

Again, my main purposes are to delete stock apps, install 2.3, get a screenshot app, and back everything up. I still want to use my go launcher and have the look I have now.

I'm running on a macbook pro.
Where do I start? What are roms and firmware? What's "flashing"?
Can I root to delete apps then unroot?

as you can tell I am very lost. hahaha.
but I'll figure it out if I'm pointed in the right direction.

To root you will delete everything on your phone.

You will be able to remove stock apps, install 2.3, and back up all your data after root. You will have to set up the launcher again after you root unless go has some sort of backup feature.

Start with the stickys here, if you don't know what a sticky is Google it ;) (no insult intended just seeing that a lot recently)

Roms and firmware are the same thing, they are the version of Android you are running on your phone at any given time. Different roms offer different options for customization beyond stock.

You can get root uninstall bloatware and unroot, you couldn't get 2.3 that way, and if you get an update from Verizon it will bring the bloatware back and may make the phone unrootable.

i dont know for sure what it is or when it will be publicly available,but my hopes are that its alphapevx/unrevoked's new root method wich is different than our current manual root method.

unless youre desperate to get it rooted today may wanna hold off for a few and see what pops up :)

other than that,nothing to add to yeahhas post. if you have questions after reading post em up :)
 
I am hesitant to push a new rooter to try a method that is still being tested, even more so when I haven't seen the method and would be unable to give any support. Jcase is the man when it comes to the bolt so if you are willing to be a tester go ahead.
 
I would would not push anyone either direction without more info on the forthcoming method.

I believe it's not fair to push someone toward the Current method without giving the info that something better may be around the corner.

If the new method is what I hope it to be,its worth waiting for IMO.take it for what its worth,its just my opinion.

Root now or wait,I am Here to help either way :)
 
Yeah, I hope the new method works (without data loss and all), any word on if the GB update will remain unrootable?
 
No word yet. I'm going to guess that he alpharev/unrevoked method will work,tho. Just my feeling,no basis on any facts :)
 
I hope so, I get the feeling if the device becomes unrootable to new users the dev community will suffer and some may move on quicker than they would have to a phone who's root community will grow, on the plus side if it does then I also would think the value of a rooted or rootable bolt would grow as well

Ah, okay thanks. I tried looking for Jcase's tweet about it, but it appears to be missing. I haven't rooted yet mostly due to having to back up all my stuff (laziness and lack of time) and this would be perfect!

If u can't wait for the method posted above but want to keep data:
Pre-Root Backup with ADB
At your own risk, I have not tried it but saw it on xda.
It will supposedly backup ur data before rooting and let u restore it after
