I am new to the whole Android thing but I know that I what a phone that runs it. My problem is what phone. I am looking at the Incredible, Droid A855, Eris and Ally. I will be purchasing a used phone and I think the Incredible is the most expensive of the bunch, maybe for a reason. Actually I will need two phones but they could be different. We just signed up with P+ after being with AT&T for 20 years. I am currently using an old Verizon phone that belongs to a friend of my to test the service. So far, so good. We would not be heavy data users and certainly not gamers. Just like to have the ability to go online on occasion to check something out, a few tx messages, but mostly phone calls. We use our laptops for serious internet usage. Can someone that has been doing this for a while make a suggestion.
Thanks!

Sounds like with your limited need for most smartphone features, you might be best served to go with the least expensive option in your list. JMO based off the info you provided.

You are probably right, but the other side of me likes the better hardware. The Eris may be a good option.

With how you plan on using it you would be much better off getting a verizon feature phone, if you get an Android phone you will need to pay for the $30 unlimited data use while if you get a feature phone you can opt for the $10 for 75MB. Likely if you get a smartphone you will start using it more than you expect, I would suggest get either the Moto Droid 1 or the HTC Droid Incredible if you go the smartphone route. The Eris is the lowest powered phone on your list and I have had bad experiences with LG quality and messed around with an Ally and was not very satisified personally. If you choose to get an Android smartphone I suggest get one that will give a good user experience and will be able to take advantage of the plan you will need to pay for as well. The difference of the price of the phones is minimal compared to the amount you will pay over the lifetime of the plan you have.

Well I am just going to say this....everyone starts out by saying "I am just going to use my knew smartphone for some calls and maybe some text and every once in a while go online" and each day you own the phone you realize just how awesome it is to have a small computer in your hands, next thing you know you are pulling your phone out to check a quick email, browsing the internet while waiting on line, all the way to checking wikipedia to prove your friend wrong on something he said. Out of all the phones you mention the Incredible is the best and would probably last you the longest out of the bunch, not to mention it is still a great phone (looks, performance, etc...). I really wouldn't consider any other of your choices.

Trust me on this, you think you may use the phone a little here and there, I have heard the story plenty from my co-workers...next thing you know they flinging angry birds.

Welcome to the Android club, enjoy your stay.

Yeah the incredible would be the best bet as it has the best specs. The droid 1 is still a good phone but has more limitations than the incredible but makes for a good first smartphone even more so once rooted. The ally and eris I would stay away from.
