Help New to using Internet Phones.

bar code

Newbie
OK so I'm really really confused. I'm a PC expert, but know nothing about internet phones (smartphones?).

Whenever I encounter a brand new laptop or pc, I'd wipe it, and do a clean installation of Windows. Then install drivers.

How does that work with Android phones?
I have LG Motion MS770 with Android ICS installed. My carrier is MetroPOS.

Is it possible to wipe it just like I'd do a PC. Then install the latest version of Android (Jellybean 4.2.2)?

Please help me!
Thanks!

O.o umm okay i.want to ask why but i mean you can... Go to the lg motion 4g and you can find out how. Follow the unbrick method but i mean it won't do anything unless you use a different firmware. You can use C, D, E, and F.with.F being the latest

Thanks. But I don't understand what you just said.

My reasoning is that I have no idea what is junk bloat. Also to have the latest up to date version of the OS. So I want to get rid of everything currently on there. Then install the latest version - Jellybean 4.2.2.

You mean go to the section for lg motion 4g on this site? OK I'll look into it. I just joined this site, and noticed sections for models.

You cant do that. Unlike PCs which have drivers ready for installation separate from windows, drivers for mobile devices need to be embedded directly into the OS installer. The only way to get a clean Android experience is getting a Nexus device. Even if you manage to get a clean AOSP ROM for your non Nexus phone, you're still at the mercy of third party ROM developers.

ok. so with my phone starting from factory settings how would i go about updating tp latest android version?

PC Expert and still using windows??????? ;)
of course. xp has been the most stable os on earth for years. w7 & w8 are good. especially w8 booting. vista is trash though.

Getting rid of everything unwanted then installing the latest OS would.bring back everything you got rid of. It would be pointless

Go to your settings and then about phone, scroll down to the. Software version and look for the letter at the.end. It will be between c-f. F is the latest

ya its f. all up to date. however the android version is outdated. its like 4.0. the latest is 4.2.2.

so from my phone at factory settings how do I upgrade to the 4.2.2?

you dont, wait thats wrong. I mean you cant its not possible unless LG gives out a Jellybean update to MetroPCS and then MetroPCS okays its to us.

you're as latest as you possibly can 4.0.4 is the latest THIS phone has

I understand what you are saying
But it doesnt really work that way
You have the latest for our phone
The 4.2.2
Isnt really the same
You could say its a different os
Its not like ours at all
And our phones are currently prevented from putting any os we want( locked bootoader)
But you may want to look at a thread about
Cm10
Some people here are trying hard to modify 4.2.2 to get it on our phone
It may not be exactly as released but is getting close to fully functional on our phone
Hope this helps you understand better

As now yes
But as i said is being ported right now to work on the motion
But it is not exact because the motion is limited pn what we can change or alter
After a little time here you will understand better
We have a Locked Bootloader
Which means if we alter the Kernel that will cause your phone to stop working
There are other files we cant touch or the phone will stop working
People are trying to unlock the bootloader so we have complete control
So wr can make our own kernels and install whatever we can make run on the motion

ok. thanks for the advice. so for now i guess ill just use the os & keep it updated. even though theres some junk default software that ill never use. I'll study everything & see what i can get rid of manually.

Yeah
If your rooted you can remove alot of software you dont need
Remember this is linux
When you buy your phone you are guest user(windows term)
Root user is (administrator)
So basically.in a way you will be learning about linux here

In PC terms.. we've got a pc with a password for the bios.. and Windows has an admin password. We're a limited user, we can make some changes, and install software, but we can't make system level changes.

And the system drive is locked, preventing a fresh isntall.

We've got dedicated hackers that are working to break the passwords, or to escalate the user privileges to allow us to install new operating systems, but they also have to write a version of the new operating system that has the drivers for our pc built in

Great analogy.

ok i see. thanks for teaching me this information. i never knew it was like this. so its not like a PC that you can just wipe and do whatever you want. you have to actually go through developing hacks to do all of this.which I'm not really trying to go through. thanks for all the advice.

ya.i know in Linux the administrators name is root. so i guess what everyone is calling"rooting" means logging in as root? i think I'm going learn to do that before proceeding with any configuring. also i still haven't figured out how to access the file system other than going through the Polaris default office suite. thanks!

EDIT - for example- i have a apk installer file for a app that i transferred from my PC into one of the folders in my phones hard drive. & the only way i know how to navigate to it is by going into polaris. i don't see any sort of standalone file manager/explorer ui that allows me to navigate files & folders.

You can go to the Google Play store and search on file managers. Some require root and others don't.

Look at this
http://androidforums.com/motion-4g-all-things-root/709736-rom-wip-cm10-0-0-l0-bobz.html
I wouldnt attempt to run this if i were you (yet) till you know more
Have you rooted your phone yet?
Installed recovery?
Just curious
hi. sorry i just noticed this post. thanks for that link. so basically what I'm understanding is unlike pc, typical internet phone won't install any sort of os by default. so users basically have to use the os built specifically for the phone they're using. or come up with some sort of hack/mod.

i haven't yet figured out how to login as root. I'm not sure what you mean by recovery. thanks!

ok thanks. so there's no actual standard file manager built into the os? i actually have to install an app for that?

i found one called root explorer. is that a good one?

thats the best one actually and yes, most oems and aosp dont include a file mgr anymore.
