Help New to using Internet Phones.

+1 above for pointing out the all things root subforum. Along with the routing thread, I would suggest taking a look at the 2nd init recovery thread. It will allow you to create a full system backup. Even if you decide not to flash a custom ROM, doing a full system backup is worth having the recovery.

Most importantly, read, read, read some more, ask questions, read some more, the read some more again. Oh, did I say read a lot? I musta read every thread I could find, pertaining to my old Optimus M before I rooted. I had it 2 months before I did anything. It really is pretty easy to root this phone, and the recovery is also easy.

I'm gonna do that as much as possible. i successfully rooted my phone.I now have the following apps installed thus far-
supersu
joeykrim root checker basic
root explorer
titanium backup pro
nova launcher prime + teslaunread plugin

Glad you were able to root. I don't think you need to keep the root checker any more, after you have verified root. Another good app to have is Android terminal emulator.

I tested out some office apps. for some reason kingsoft office which is free makes office suite pro 7 ($15) look like total garbage.

If you want to see some stuff about your phone
In terminal emulator
Type
su
When it grants superuser rights
Type
getprop

A list of settings,i am sure you will no what some of them
And for other people
I mentioned this before
You will notice our phone comes stock ready with
Flash_recovery as a service
I guess thats incase it gets unlocked
The lastkmsg says it gets disabled because script insnt there

i haven't used the terminal yet because i still don't understand alot about Linux.

something i been trying to figure out is how to directly access the dial pad for my phone app. like when i open it, the last menu i was on shows up. either call log, contacts, or dial pad. but how can i get it to just open up the dial pad section every time by default?

Google is definitely your friend to help you with the Linux/Android command line.

As to the dial pad, I'm not sure. I never really give it much thought. When I open the phone app, if it's on another tab I just select the dial pad.

you dont, wait thats wrong. I mean you cant its not possible unless LG gives out a Jellybean update to MetroPCS and then MetroPCS okays its to us.

you're as latest as you possibly can 4.0.4 is the latest THIS phone has

I am brand new to smart phones, too. Just purchased the LG Motion from MetroPCS less than a week ago. Please would you elaborate on what is "Jellybean" and the likelihood that the OS will be updated for THIS phone? Thanks!

Yeah
If your rooted you can remove alot of software you dont need
Remember this is linux
When you buy your phone you are guest user(windows term)
Root user is (administrator)
So basically.in a way you will be learning about linux here

I am completely unfamiliar with the term "root." How does one root the phone?

Thanks.

thats the best one actually and yes, most oems and aosp dont include a file mgr anymore.

oh yea LOL@windows anything begin the most stable of all time. That would be FreeBSD or any linux distro really. ;)

My LG Motion from MetroPCS comes with an app called Application Manager. Is that the same thing as a file manager???

1) Become familiar with your Google or forum search Button?

2) Actually look at a forum and see if maybe some pinned threads Right At The Beginning might answer some questions?

Just sayin' just maybe. :D

the operating system everyone here has on our phone is android. the latest version of android os is android-jellybean. the version of android our phone uses is android - ics which is the version just prior to jellybean.

rooting the phone means unlocking all administrative access & privileges. by default the phone comes with many features locked.

like a demo version of a game or software where you can only do limited bs. when you upgrade to the full version you play all levels and use all features. that's exactly the difference between a phone that's limited and a phone that's rooted. a limited phone blocks out alot of features so it's like using a demo. whereas rooting the phone opens everything up fully.

no. application manager takes you to your applications settings menu. a file manager allows you to navigate/explore your file system & manage your files & folders.
