Root New Unrevoked 3.21 Beta for FROYO is up

Stupid question from someone just starting off in the Android world:

I have a DInc with OTA 2.2 and was wondering if I root the phone with unrevoked, would I loose the Sense UI interface?

After reading this thread I would love to try and root to get rid of some of the useless stuff that has been added to my phone, but am a little unsure of jumping in.

Rooting alone does not modify anything other than the stock recovery, and installing the superuser app.

absolutley not!!!! you don't loose a thing. All your programs, setting, saved info, etc, etc stay the same. You have nothing to loose......

Thanks Dizko!! and Wedge

So basically the phone would be exactly as it is/looks now, but I would be able to get rid of some of the bloat ware. Flashing ROM's is what would get "rid" of Sense and alter the way the phone looks?

I'm off the next 2 days, think I might make the jump.

Soo, I joined the irc as it doesn't seem the files are up on the unrevoked site, but how do I go about doing this through the irc? I have never joined an irc before, so be gentle. :)

The link for the beta is at the top of the chanel.

Once you root, check out Virtous 2.7. It is pretty much stock Sense with most of the bloat removed.

Exactly. I had the same questions as you. Just rooted yesterday. Not a thing changes. How this? you won't even know you have root unless you do those things your talking about doing. Everything is the same as before you rooted.

and sorry Jamor, i was reading his as typing and typed "loose" by mistake.

by the way, what does "runs" mean (i love forum lingo - if thats even what it is)

hey guys,

wonder if any of you would be able to help. I have rooted before when the dinc was still 2.1, but for what ever reason i am having an issue this time.

I have the skd installed, including the drivers from the sdk. I am attempting to apply the unrevoked modified drivers but when i go into device manager under "other devices" i am getting 3 options: 2 "Base System Device" and 1 "Unknown Device" instead of the Android 1.0 device.

Should i have installed the entire SDK package?

I have the phone in usb debugging mode, set to charge only, running on windows 7. Like i said i've rooted before on this computer so if anyone has an idea i'd love to hear it, dying to get this phone rooted!

Was wondering where I could find a step by step guide to rooting an Inc with stock 2.2? I have downloaded the reflash.exe file from the irc link, but I keep reading about drivers, SDK etc... and don't want to F up my phone.

This is all very new to me and I want to learn about this, but there are sooo many resources available it's hard to determine what will work for me. I have read some stuff on XDA but all I'm looking for is a guide: step 1 do this, step 2 do this etc...

I think I'm putting more pressure on myself than I need to.....

not to be a dick, but PLEASE read/search through this thread, it's only 4 pages and direct links to step by step instructions have been posted, at least 3 times, so please look through the thread and you will find the guide you seek

I'm in the process of making my own to do list for root prepping. I've been reading too much about this and.. some themes and the wireless tether are far too tempting to try out. And I doubt that there's going to be another OTA for awhile now.

So far, I have everything but the offical reflash.exe file. Waiting on that!

I'm going to ask a silly question. Aren't there videos of rooting on youtube? That might be best to give me a mind of what to expect. :D I did the same thing when prepping to jailbreak my iPod and it doesn't bother me at all now.

Not so silly question: This will work on Win 7-64bit, right?

No worries, but I am following the jonamerica guide posted in this thread and under "Getting Ready" step 2 it says to run SDK setup.exe, yet there is no file named "setup.exe"

Just trying to follow along step by step......

Also, it says to go to the location where I extracted the Unrevoked file, yet I didn't extract any Unrevoked files. When I downloaded the reflash file from the irc site, it was an .exe and not a zipped file. There was nothing to extract

click "sdk Manager" with the little android figure next to it. That is the .exe with out the extension

In defense to people having trouble rooting their phones...most of the step-by-step instructions are not up to date with the changes made and have steps that are either wrong, worded incorrectly, or simply out of date. They all need to be updated to the new way to root 2.2 which is a little different than 2.1 it would seem.

OK, so I followed the guide from jonamerica and I thought all was well as the unrevoked flash tool gave me the "done" message. The next step on that guide was to make a backup and it says to go into the clockwork mod recovery. I turned the phone off, then held down the volume down and power button and it came up with the stock recovery screen.

I have no idea what I did wrong or if the root even worked.

Are you sure you're not on the HBOOT screen rather than the recovery screen?

you should be good. I thought the same thing. Can't remeber perfectly right now but you have to click on "Recovery" first and then Clockwork Recovery comes up. I did the exact same thing as you (the instructions leave that step out).
