Hi all, I'm after a little bit of guidance, I hope someone out there can help...I'm due to receive a couple of SG Notes, one for me, one for my wife, and wondered if it would make sense to upgrade to ICS as soon as they arrive? Also I'd be gratefull if you could tell me if Keis would treat each phone as seperate phones. Would I have to down load Keis twice, once for her phone and once for mine and if the info for each phone would be kept seperate. I don't want to have her phone numbers and pics etc mixing with mine & visa-versa.
I hope this goes to the correct area, sorry to the mods if I've started mucking things up already:o

if ics is already available in your area/region, yes you can upgrade. but since ics is already released in many countries, it might have ics already out of the box. kies would recognize the phones separately as each phone have different google accounts. these accounts are required during the initial set up of the note. you can create separate folders in backing up you and your wife's data. i have used kies to back up data on my galaxy s and galaxy note and i think it can back up as many samsung phones as it can. hope it helps.

Thanks for the quick answer ayongkot, but I really wanted to know if it would make more sense to update to ICS before I put any apps or personal stuff on the phone. Would that save the need to do a factory restore if I upgrade later? Or should I wait to update until Samsung have fixed any issues?

It shouldn't matter if you have apps on or not, usually all of your files, contacts and pics are kept on the phone after the upgrade. :)

personally i like more ics than gingerbread. i have flashed ics since its first leak despite the bricking that was reported, in fact already 5 different ics releases have been flashed on my note and the only thing that i did not do was wiped/reset the phone in clockwork mode which where mostly the bricking happened. since i have acquired my note october of last year, i never updated it via kies because release of firmware in various regions are much delayed. i always used pc odin and lately mobile odin to flash firmware and besides, i always root my phone after flashing stock firmware to have more freedom. if you don't want to root your phone, you could upgrade immediately since, like you said, it would save time in restoring the stuffs that you will have installed while on gingerbread. as to my case, i have titanium backup pro wherein everytime i have to flash a new firmware, my stuffs can be restored in just 1 click. battery is equal or even better in ics and there are lots of features in ics that is lacking in gingerbread. i never will go back to gb. right now i am on lq2 uk/ireland with lr1 modem and cf-root kernel for lq2.

I probably wouldn't recommend rooting and flashing with Odin to a new user. There are certain risks involved and if you're a novice, it could go wrong and you'll be left with an expensive paper weight.

Well, if you have the chance to install ICS and you want to take the risk of installing it (there is the somewhat unconfirmed threat that some operations in ICS can brick the Note, see other threads if you want more details) then I would perform the update before installing any apps. Some people have needed to perform a factory reset to get ICS to perform well after upgrading. Since this deletes all apps it makes sense to do this first.

Certainty many people are using ICS and are happy with it, but then the same can be said for Gingerbread. I am a member of the happy Gingerbread user group.

Regards,
Eric Ritchie.

I would definitely update to ICS if it is not already installed before installing any apps, assuming the update is available to you. This is perhaps the most ideal state your Note can be to accept the update.

Thanks for all of the input...my phone arrived just after lunch today. OMG, this phone is Humungus! and so very wonderful!!! I took the risk and put ICS on it almost as soon as it arrived, all seems to be well.
I got the black one and have also ordered the white one for my wife, which should arrive tomorrow. She will be at work when it arrives, so I get to play with another brand new phone, so I'll have to put some stupid stuff on there...any ideas?:D

I was quite surprised how much 'dodgy' stuff there is on the Play Store! Just how good is your relationship? :smokingsomb:

The thing is, she probably wouldn't be able to find stuff that I put on her phone, but my kids would  so maybe I should err on the side of caution! lol
