I use the camera on my DX2 very often. The convenience of not having to lug around an extra piece of tech is important to me (hell I use a rubber band around my credit cards wrapped in my cash as my wallet) as I don't like anything bulky or extra to carry with me if possible. Of course that's what my GF is for with her purse (heh) but I don't always want to rely on her either. Anyway, I am quite happy with the quality of the pics my DX2 takes with the Camera360 app set on HDRlight and I only expect the quality to be better on future phones like the RAZR. I would be surprised if it would be worse.

Do you also carry your phone with you when going on holiday and only use that? I take my Nikon D90 (700g), Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens (400g), Tamron 70-200 f2.8 (1.1kg) and a few accessories (500g). That all adds up to 2.7kg and stil I am happy to lug it around as I know I am going to get great photos from that.

Just two samples.

The camera in the phone makes or breaks the deal for me. We have a Canon 5D Mark II with quite a few thousand in lenses for events and times we can take it along. But most of the time it's a pain in the butt to try and drag it along with 4 kids and all the crap I end up taking for them. I end up not wanting to carry ANYTHING I don't have to.

I've really come to depend on the camera phone to catch some great times as family just out doing whatever. On top of that, you never know what you're going to see when downtown Austin (where I work) that you need to document to prove to others ;)

While I can totally understand some people having no interest in quality pictures from their phone, I don't understand how they could possibly argue it being an important factor for many others.

Very good point! I kind of turn the other way when someone gets to talking about how its a phone, and if u want a good camera, buy a really good camera! Ifs kind of a pointless argument ...If the phone comes with a 5-8 megapixel camera it should take really good pictures. Case closed 100%...

Its almost like saying, hey man, if you want a really good phone that makes terrific calls, well then buy a phone that is specifically made for making calls, not a smart phone that is made for media...lol!

Its 2011, almost 2012....these features should not even be in question! Especially when a company like RIM was able to put decent cameras on phones 2/3 years ago..
YES...my old BB 9700 took better pics then my Droiddddd Bionic...makes zero sense!

Truth is that what you get in a phone is not supposed to be treated as a main camera. A $200 point and shoot will take better pictures. Does not matter if it is 5 or 8mpx because that has nothing to do with quality - in reality, the higher the resolution the less quality you get.

ok you are obviously an exception to the camera bashing lol. Its obvious you are a photographer by hobby at the least so i wouldn't expect you to want much out of a camera on a phone.

But for the other 98% of users the camera is becoming a make or break deal on smartphones. me included.

What he just said...lol!

Yea, if someone is a camera buff...no camera on a phone will work up to expectations. But for the rest of us, we just want a good, fast, clear shot out of our shooters from the phone.

Im a 2% then :) ive probably used my camera on my phone a total of 10 times in 2 years. I dont care what kind of pics a phone takes.

So for me if the camera sucks or its good has no bearing on whether I keep the phone or not.

Me too. As long as the camera takes pics that are good enough to submit to the DAR on The Chive, I'm happy :)

We have a $200 canon camera as our main camera. I don't carry murses or like to be sidled with extra things to lug around. My GF carries the canon in her purse most of the time when we are on vaca. I still prefer the pics my DX2 takes honestly. So yes, I use the DX2 as my main camera frequently, but my GF prefers the canon. Mostly, I like the hdr filter on the camera360 app. I also like to be able to use picsaypro to crop and adjust the images on the fly, send to dropbox, or post to facebook, etc. Very convenient. I am no camera or picture offcianado, so I don't get into raw photo editing etc like probably do. Maybe someday I will but for now honestly my DX2 (or whatever phone) is my personal main camera of choice.
 
I use my Canon, Sony small cams when I need to take good pictures. They are not DSLR but still better than phone cameras in speed and image quality. But when I'm with only phone and need to take some pictures urgently, I use phone cameras and want it to be quick and reasonably good for small printing, web postings.

I think $622 is a weird price maybe that was after taxes? I mean wasnt the bionic when it was leaked going for 6something to and then on launch it was less? Maybe all that kevlar and all that added to the price.

An upgrade would come in handy right now...lol!

Whichever phone I choose, I'm getting about half back after I sell my Bionic. So not terrible...

Probably less. Not trying to be controversial but the build quality of the Nexus doesn't warrant a premium price tag.

I would be surprised to see the same premium price tag for it.

I think you are right, but more so just they will advertise all that it has whether it costs that much more to make or not and charge more because it has kevlar and all that hoopla.
