Help New with Note II LTE - Questions about notifications

peb35

Lurker
Dear all,

I am quite new with Android (have been using iPhones for few years).
Since last weekend I use a Note II with LTE. I am living in Hong-Kong.

I am getting quite mad about notifications and I wish you could help me :

1- I receive maybe 200 emails a day, I don't want to hear that ring every-time I get one, it's very annoying. I been into settings and switch-off notifications for emails. But I still get the sound for each email. How can I really turn off the notifications for emails? Of course I want to keep notifications for SMS and whatsapp, etc..

2- About SMS and whatsapp, I want to see a message preview on my phone when I receive one, so I can quickly see what it says, no need to go into the app, and check message to see if important/urgent or not.
Where can I activate that? I was good on iphone, just get a message and swipe it on the screen, to fully read it.

I might have other questions later, I hope you will help me here, because my Note II never stop ringing if I don't put the sound at 0% for notifications (but I just missed 1 urgent SMS, because I couldn't hear).

Thanks for your help,
Pierre

Hi there. Good move from iPhone!

Problem 1 - something to do with the email agent, not general settings. If you are using the stock agent, open it. Press Menu button, go to Settings -> General Preferences -> Select Ringtone -> Silent. This should solve your problem.

Problem 2 - I am afraid this is not possible with the stock apps. Try installing Handcent SMS. I am an ex-iPhone user, too, so I really missed this feature. Have done a great deal of research on the subject and Handcent appears to be the best for the task. It is even an upgrade to what iPhone has got: it wakes up the phone and pops up a window with the text of the message and a place where you can type an immediate reply (either by inputting text or voice). Regretfully, for WhatsUp you'll have to stick to stock notifications :(

I hope it was helpful.

Thanks for your answer!
1- THanks, I found the way.
2- Ok I will try to find this app. So sad for whatsapp, it's maybe the messenger app I use the most...

If there 2 functions really cannot solve for me, I might move back to iPhone, it's a very annoying thing for daily use...

I found the solution!
It's well possible to show notifications of whatsapp in the middle of the screen, even when screen is off.

Go to the chat list, press menu button, settings, notifications...
Everything ok now.

Regards,
Pierre

Thanks for that Pierre, I was reading this thread as I fully intend on getting a Note 2 at the end of the month (when payday has been, lol) but wanted this function on my current phone. Yay, now I have it.:)
