Root new world phone capabilities

Still learning all this geek stuff I have the RA recover installed and I poked around looking at the backup options. It has a default selection to backup and a few that are not selected. I assume that if I backup the default selections this is all I need to roll back my apps after the flash?

Here are the selections X indicates default selection

Boot X
System X
Data X
Cache X
recovery
SD-Ext
.android_secure
.android_secure_interalSD
compress_backup

Yes you just need to backup the first four, /boot, /system, /data, /cache . You don't need the others and don't check compress backup bc it makes it hard to restore. Since you are s-off, don't restore /boot from the backup or you will go back to old firmware. U will just need to restore /data and possibly /system. Make sure you do full wipe in amon ra after backup but before flashing new firmware.

I flashed this tonight and I have all the correct versions shown in the image above but I dob't have the Global option in settings. In fact the system select is grayed out. Above this in Network Mode it only lists LTE/CDMA and CMDA only.

did you flash OTAPkg? so you have hboot .27 as well?

if i go to settings/mobile network/prefered network i have the following options:
-global
-lte/cdma
-gsm/umts
-cdma only

where are you looking exactly?

I flashed the package linked in post #4. Then rebooted. In the location you refer to I still only have LTE/CDMA and CDMA. Baseband version is 2.22.10.0801 and 0803

aha,you have only flashed the firmware. you wont get any global benefits unles you flash a rom as well. here is a stock 4.03.605.2: [Rom][8.23.12]Here another 4.03.605.2 signed[Rooted][Rom] - xda-developers

there are prolly others as well,if you look around the rezound development forum on xda :)

Okay...so firmware plus rom compatible with it (not just any old ICS ROM) equals success? (Global capability). I am still confused a bit (why I haven't taken the plunge). Do we not need to upgrade the radio?

The instructions in post #16 refers to restoring a full backup. But this confuses me, as I am thinking the ROM has to be compatible with the new firmware.

correct

yes,you need to upgrade the radio, wich is,along with the hboot and some orhter bits, part of "firmware"
firmware=parts that make the hardware run
software=parts that make up the the basic operating system.uses the firmware, and tells the rest of OS what to do and how to do it.

the directions in post 16 are for the s-on folks who what the new firmware, but not the software. i.e.,want the new radios and hboot, but want to use them with whatever rom they were currently running.

if you want global capabilities, youll need rom and firmware for success.

if youre on a clean 3.14.605.12,with stock fimrware, and stock recovery, and no bloat removed, you can just wait for the OTA.

your other options would be:
1)following the directions in post 16 to get the fimrware, but installing a 4.03.605.2 based rom in place of the part where he restores his backup.

2)run full ruu for 4.03.605.2,then re-unlock,launch recovery, and flash root files.

Okay, so I followed the instructions in post 16 and I lost root. Entering "fastboot oem lock" caused the phone to reboot and now I am back to stock. Moving on to the next step in post 16 did nothing. I tried to re-root (following unlock), but every tool I use tells me I do not have root access. No idea what went wrong but I am now back to what seems to be an unlocked phone (hboot does say tampered) running stock ICS.

I tried rerooting, but to no avail. Installing superuser from amon ra did not work. Hasoon's tool did not work. (I used it to attempt root only). So, where did i go wrong?

Did you flash the correct superuser for.ics from amon recovery?

In the op of the root guide there are links for Su 3.0.7 for.gb,and superSU for ics.

Alternately, you can simply flash a rooted stock Rom from xda.

I tried flashing superuser from amon ra (I think it's in the developer menu). I tried the version on the market (that was referenced in xda). I have not tried the zip version. The easiest thing to do I guess is to flash a stock rom later today (I can't do it at work).

Yup, flashing in recovery worked. Thanks again, sensei.....

Okay...I am manning up to give this another try. I have a couple 4.03.605.2 ROMS to now choose from, included an updated Nils ROM

-fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
(it will fail for with pre-update flush again immediately error). So do it again -->
-fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
(it will finish)

For the steps above, I will have extracted the zip files and placed in the adb folder. I just wanted to confirm that I would use the fastboot flash zip firmware.zip on a file that is extracted from a zip file.

edit: firmware flash fails. not sure why. i typed "fastboot flash zip firmware.zip" without success

is firmware.zip inside your mini-adb_vigor folder?

you need to extract "OTAPkg",then take firmware.zip from that extracted folder. you will, however, leave firmware.zip as a zipped up file.

whenever you have prollems with adb commands, provide a copy/paste of your cmd window.looking at all the commands its usually pretty easy to see where it went wrong. :)

Thanks. I will provide screenshots going forward.

As for firmware, it was in the mini-adb folder. However, the unzipping program I used (7 zip) unzipped the firmware subfolder that was in the OTA folder. So when transferred to the adb folder, it was not a zipped file.

I redid that step, and now firmware folder is in the adb folder and is definitely zipped.

I also noticed these instructions above:

-pull the battery and replace. Hold down volume down button plus power button to boot into hboot, then fastboot mode.
-fastboot boot amon ra

Rather than pulling the battery, I assume I can just run the command "reboot bootloader" from cmd prompt. After this, I can reunlock and either reboot (i am on stock) or flash a 4.03.605.1-compatible ROM.

Good in theory... ;)

If you read thru the posts after that you'll see why the battery pul is needed. Re-unlocking does a factory reset and automatically reboots the phone, leaving no opportunity for fastboot reboot bootloader.

You will need to.relock to flash the firmware.

You coukd prolly avoid the battery pull if you flash your Rom of.choice prior to relocking. That way the boot image in the firmware will be compatible.

I am big on theory. Practice, not so much

Actually, the reboot thing did happen to me. But i hadn't updated anything for the failure to flash firmware to have caused a problem. And I had forgotten about that experience. Thanks for reminding me that reading is fundamental.

Okay, it worked well. I am on the global firmware. One hint to folks: make sure there are no PH89IMG files on the external SD card. Scotty and others emphasize this often. I had one on my SD that complicated things. I had to pull the battery and remove the offending file. After that, reboot was not a problem. I am now running the latest ineffabilis on 4.03.605.2

Thanks again Scotty and Obscuro.
