Help newb question about turning data on/off

So I have a question. does toggling the data on/off do any damage or "wear" the phone out? The reason I ask, is on Monday I started doing just that using battery doctor. At some point I went to turn the data back on and it wouldn't. This began my week of countless emails and calls to Virgin about the problems.

Today's been the first day I've had a connection all day with no problems, and while I want to extend my battery life by turning the data off when I'm not using it, I'm afraid to lose my connection again. I mean it could be just a coincidence and VM had data outages (judging from the facebook page I wasn't alone), but thought I'd ask those who probably know far more than me.

Alot of the battery savings programs take control of the 3g data and it wont let you manually connect.

I had the issue with juice defender.

I turn data on/off manually from the settings menu or using Data Enabler widget which just gets you to the menu with one tap. These are the safest way to do it and I never had problem turning it on after it has been off.

Programs that do it for you mess with other settings of the connection and it's possible to have problems with those.
