Help Newb with questions

I am new to the android, migrating over from blackberry. The first thing I have noticed is a considerable difference in battery. On my bb from tmobile, I was getting a day or 2 of battery life with a lot of use. Hundreds of text a day, emails (2 accounts), talk, and web browsing.
I got my mytouch 3g slide yesterday it charged for about 6 hours. I took it off the charger around 9-930 at night. I played with for a while, went to bed and got up and it was at less then 30%. Now when i went to bed, i was only missing a little bit of battery. I didn't think it would drain that much overnight with no use.
That is going to be a serious problem because of the amount i use my phone.
I am currently charging again. Does it take a couple of charges before the battery life will reach it's peak?
Also with my bb, i was getting 1 bar of signal and constantly switching from 3g, to edge, to gprs. With MT3g, i am getting 1-2 bars. Does poor signal drain the battery faster?
Any help or tips would be appreciated.

By the way, I am new to android and I am pretty clueless when it comes to phones and stuff.

Thanks,

Bill

You'll also want to adjust your syncing schedule. If you have a lot of apps that sync a lot of stuff a lot of the time, that means the phone is working non-stop. Adjust accordingly.

I think the battery life isn't too bad brand new.

I'm switched from a BB Curve and Behold 1.

BB Curve was great on batteries but the screen was very small and picture was crappy compared to the MTS.

Behold ate up way more battery than the MTS. The Behold is a full touch screen too. I think the Behold is crap.

Yeah that is the only thing I am not liking so far is the battery life. I don't get a signal in my house so I use wi-fi a lot and it just drains the battery so quickly. I'm kinda hoping that the battery breaks in too or that they address this in the update. I use it, constantly for about 4-5 hours and it's down to 20%. I was hoping to be able to watch movies and stuff every once in awhile but I doubt it will happen if it keeps draining like that. I may have to get an extra battery like the guy in the other thread.

Ok download a task manager from the market.

open it to see what programs you are running.

Kill any different programs other than the ones your phone came with.

The exceptions are the browser (kill it), maps, market, my account.

now go to your settings and make sure wifi/gps/bluetooth are turned off.

Also, lower down the brightness of your screen.

Finally lower down the timeout delay for your screen to lock out.

These will greatly help preserve your battery life, but you still wont get a day more, but you will notice the difference.

If you go into "rooting" your phone, you can get an app that will lower down the speeds of your phone, which will make your phone last longer, but make your phone run slower. Its a give and take thing here. So if your a hectic person who texts every 5 seconds, this might not be the option for you.

You might want to just put chargers everywhere, car charger, computer usb cables, and outlet chargers.

Yeah I have a car charge, one at work and one at home. (where exactly do you find out how much battery you have left?) I get the message when it gets to 30%, but I thought i remember seeing it somewhere in the menus. I have been searching and cant' find.

Just download any battery app from the market and it will tell you.
