Newbee to Epic

Ok here goes. I am a Sprint customer that currently has the Evo. Great phone, but I'm also interested in a phone with a slide out keyboard. My wife and son both have the Moment and she LOVES it. No problems what so ever. I currently have an upgrade available and, while I don't need to use it now, I don't see Sprint releasing any phones in the near future that have a slide out keyboard. Actually, I tried the new HTC Arrive. The phone is very solid, but I'm not feelin the Windows. The deal breaker was.... I CAN"T READ THE TEXT . Ok Ok , I'm 48 years old and sometimes need glasses, but that was crazy. ANYWAY, I'm very interested in the Epic, but I've heard some concerns about it, from the " back button" to the upgrade to 2.2. Please be honest in your assesment of the phone. I realize that many, if not all, of you love your phones, but when tying yourself to a phone for 2 years, one must be careful. And since I tried the Arrive, the next phone I get I'm " stuck" with. Please offer input. Thanks

Well, both the Evo and Epic are awesome phones IMO. My wife has the Evo and loves it... but it's not the best phone for me. I've got the Epic and love it... but it's not the best phone for her.

The back button is an issue for sure, but while it bothers my wife it doesn't bother me one bit. If you prefer Sense, perhaps check out the Shift (slide out Qwerty and still the same familiar home screen options as the Evo).

For me, the screen is a must have. For my wife, the larger screen was the must have.

Best thing you can do is go and play with phone and see if you love/hate it. :)

i have the epic and love it, the slide out keyboard and the screen make it the best by far,i too needed a screen that i could actually see(because of the eyes) and this being the amoled it is very easy to read especially with the pinch to zoom and how it resizes the words perfectly for me.
you would not be dissapointed in this phone in my opinion especially since getting the 2.2 update yes it took us awhile but it does have it, plus having the gorilla glass that doesn't scratch is also a plus. i right now wouldnt trade it for anything else out there right now.

I have the epic(not stock) and love it, my wife and step daughter both have the evo shift and both are luke warm on it. The epic's screen is a far cry better. way easier to read and watch things on than the shifts and also the keyboard is much more spacious as well. I love my epic and dont have any desire to switch anytime soon. I would recommend this phone to anyone, stock or rooted. And after coming from blackberry curve and tour and then moment to this, well this blows everything else i have owned away.

if you have the Evo now, why not wait a bit longer as the Evo is a great device to suffer with. i know you said you want slider, and the Epic is the best current slider that Sprint has, but why not wait a bit to see what might be coming in the summer or fall?

Well, currently I've been a Sprint member for 7 years and they are making changes to accounts that I'm not liking. So, I can wait and see whats coming out ( so far, other than the Arrive, the Evo 3d, The Echo and the Nexus S have been announced) there doesn't seem to be any android phones with LARGE slide out keyboards coming out. I figured I'd use my " upgrade" now, keep the Evo AND the Epic and leave Sprint in 2 years. If I wait to see whats coming, it will just make my commitment to Sprint a longer one.

sprint doesn't like to communicate about future devices and release dates until the last minute, so i feel your pain. but, i read in the Sprint forum here where a reliable source mentioned of a replacement Epic, but that could be in the fall (which would be around right as the original came out 8/31/2010).

good luck with your decision.
