Root Newbie bqck up question.

Hey guys I am new to the root world have had an Evo for a while now. Just found out about the rooted business. I havent rooted my phone yet because I am reading all I can before. I am more of a hands on guy then a read and comprehend guy so Im just reading and reading. But any who How do I back up my rom and info after I root. And what is the easiest way to root my phone. I have read all the stickys just still having a hard time. do i have to get htc drivers? I really want to figure this stuff out. I want to customize my phone. any info would be great. easy on me please. and any helpful info or link would be excellent!!

First and foremost, welcome to the forum! I know you've mentioned you've read plenty of stickies and everything, BUT.....I suggest you read (if you haven't or re-read if you already have) Rooting For Dummies + Extras. It breaks EVERYTHING down prior to rooting and after rooting and goes in depth into ROM's, Kernels, root only apps, and much more.

To answer your questions though:

1. You can use Titanium Backup to backup up data, settings, etc. or create a nandroid backup once you've rooted and unlocked nand access (s-off)

2. The easiest way to root is using unrevoked's one click method

3. Yes you have to update your hboot drivers prior to rooting

Once again, this is all covered in the Rooting For Dummies + Extra's sticky I referred you to earlier. Happy rooting and *again* welcome to the forum!

I'm actually going to run this tonight. I rooted my Hero and flashed many ROMs. There is a section on backing up your info, a NANDroid backup. Read this thread several times through until you understand the entire thing! Don't attempt a root until your sure of what you're doing. Any sections that aren't clear after you've read it a few times, just ask. The guys and gals on this forum are the best, they won't leave you hanging. :D

Yep I dont want to root my phone tell I completely understand what I am doing so Ill keep reading forums and try to soak it all in. Any questions I dont understand. Ill ask. Again thank you!
 
I'm a noob to Android and rooting. Rooting my Evo was a very easy process using the Rooting for Dummies + Extras guide here. I was still leery of flashing ROMs/kernels to it, but it was rooted for all of 48 hours before I gave into temptation and flashed Myn's Warm 2.2 R5 and a Netarchy Toastmod kernel.

I do recommend doing exactly what you're planning -- read, read, and then read some more. That way there will definitely not be many (if any) surprises. There were zero surprises for me. Everything went exactly by the book.
 
Ok im am gonna try the unrevoked meth. But I download file I try to open and is a BIN. File I cant seem to open it. What do I use? If this is a stupid Question I apoligize. I am a Exterior specialist New to the I.T world ;)

Which file are you referring to? The reflash_package.exe from Unrevoked?
 
Well, you need your phone plugged in to actually have it root the phone, but you can open it with nothing connected. It should be an exe file, though. Are you on a mac or PC?

Yeah I know it has to be plugged in to root the phone. I was just curious to see what the program was all about. I just read and read it all seems like a foreign language. but Im trying. Does any one have a good video link what the easiest way to root ur phone I have been reading straight it seems for days I just have to do it. Thanks again for all the patients from those trying to help me. oh im pc XP
 
You can just search youtube for something like "evo unrevoked" and make sure the video is no older than a month or two, and the process should be exactly what you'd find in the rooting for dummies thread. Did you ever get the exe to open?

No, I dont get it. the error message i get when try to open it is non 7-zip archive. any ideas. I am using firefox, Avg if that matters.

Okay I cleared Cache and history re downloaded and wamoo it worked now the problem I am having is I dont know how to expand my usb hboot driver i downloader in the zip file. And I dont know what to do from there. I open but then what do I do. Maybe I am not cut out for this but man I want to root my rig.
