Newbie frustration

My frustration is mounting. How do I delete a contact shortcut from the main screen? How do you manage the main screen? There doesn't seem to be anywhere where I can find just beginner info on this Captivate, and I'm about ready to put it back in the box and send it back. I really am not stupid, but this is utterly devoid of any help or functionality I recognize. Please help??

To delete a shortcut from the main screen simply press and hold the icon till the little trash can shows up. Drag the icon over to the trash can and drop it into the trash can. The shortcut should then be gone.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! My real problem is my brain just isn't working right - I'm easily frustrated now (advanced Lyme). Not an excuse, I know. I'll get better at this

Yeah, long press on the icon until it changes color and then drag it on in, like my friend said.
