Help Newbie Help!!

I just received my smartphone and love it. But the one thing that is bugging me is when I get a text, it rings once to alert me and then no other alerts?? I can't find a setting to have it ring every so often so I don't always have to be staring at my phone to see if I got a text. For example, yesterday I was vacuuming so I didn't hear my text ring. Since it only alerts me once, it was an hour and a half before I realized I had a text. Help!

The Z990 doent have the feature (the exact term escapes me) from stock. I know it was on the Motorola Razors, but its not an option on this one. Ive gotten into the habit of checking it more often.
