Help Newbie looking for some guidance

Hello everyone, I am hoping you will be kind and bear with an old lady who just (FINALLY) upgraded from an iPhone 3G to a Galaxy Note and I am quite overwhelmed! Excited, but overwhelmed.

Some basic assistance needed at first before I get all modification crazy...

1. On my iPhone, I had a list of favorite people I would call often. Is there a way to set up something similar?

2. My gmail is in a separate location from my other work-related emails. Any way to group them all together? Additionally, my gmail icon does not appear to give me a number or alert if I get a new email in it like the other work emails do... what's up with that?

3. WHAT is with the advertisements? Is this something I will have to slog through or is there a way to turn those off somehow?

4. Is there really no way to delete apps you don't want or use? I see a bunch that were preloaded I know I will never touch.

Ok that's the basics of my questions right now. My next thread will be all about how to change the lock wallpaper and ringtones and whatnot. :)

1. Long press on a contact, select "add to favorites". When you tap on the phone app, there is a "favorites" tab where you can see those contacts.

2. The Gmail icon is a separate Gmail app by Google. And yes you can set up your Email app for your Gmail. I don't use the Gmail app.

3. Depends on what ads are we talking about. Ads are a way for the developers to keep their apps free of charge. Paid apps don't have ads, or you can donate for an ad remover. If we are talking about ads in the notification bar, that's called an airpush ad. The only way to remove that is to remove the apps that use that type of ads. You can know which apps these are by installing airpush detector or add-ons detector.

4. Manufacturers and carriers often add their own apps which are embedded and can only be uninstalled with rooting. While carrier added apps are safe to remove, manufacturer added ones may not. The safest option is to simply use a different launcher from stock which has the ability to "hide" the apps from the app drawer, rendering them effective invisible.

Hi Kairiste... :)

Welcome to Android Forums - It's nice to have you join the community. I moved your thread over to the Samsung Galaxy Note Forum - here is where you can find some awesome info, tips & tricks, and get help on your device.

I hope this place will serve you well.

Thank you for the fast response - I will work on those then...

And I apologize for posting in the wrong forums, wasn't sure if I should go with the operating device as a whole or specific phone. Will stick to Note forums :)

ONE MORE QUESTION - how do I DELETE a contact? Got lots of doubles and even people I don't even know who they are (gmail import?) Want 'em gone.

To delete a contact:

Open your contacts list, press the 'menu' button. Select 'delete' and then simply tick any contacts you want deleted and then click 'delete' to confirm.

Some of your multiple contacts could be from gmail, facebook etc. You can 'merge' these contacts into a single contact. Simply hold down on one of their contact entries, and click "join contact" in the menu that pops up. You can then merge the information from multiple instances of the same contact into one contact.
