Good Day Guys

This is probably a Numpty question if you're an advanced user but it's a tough one for me. I have been using a Samsung Jet for the last four years and have been reluctant to move on, however, my kids have finally gotten me to buy an Android phone.

I purchased a HTC Desire S and it is loaded with bloatware and apps that are of no interest to me. Unlike my old phone I can't control what's on it and what's not. I have spent the last two days googling, researching and following guides but I can't root this phone, it's driving me crazy. I want to personalise my phone and make it mine, not HTCs!

So can someone kindly post a Muppets guide to rooting this phone before I tale a lump hammer to it?

Thank you in anticipation...................

Right, First things first, well need to know your bootloader version, to find out what this is, turn your phone off, press and hold the down volume button and then press the power button at the top of the phone.

Let me know what the HBoot is.

EDIT: Unlike the Desire the Desire S needs to be S-off before you can root! What is it that you don't understand about AlphaRevX?

You can start reading here to get yourself genned up.

Thanks for all the friendly responses guys.

The boot screen says as follows.

AlphaRev
SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.98.1002
RADIO-38.03.02.11_M
eMMC-boot
Mar 10 2011

Hope this helps!

Brilliant you are already S-off!!! Download Gingerbreak onto your pc, install it onto your phone and run it. You should then be rooted. Will post a link when I get to my laptop.

Internalbyte, thanks. I followed your instruction and my phone is now rooted, I've removed all the bloatware and unwanted apps and made the phone my own. Just one more question, the only program left sitting in my phone I no longer need is Superuser, how do I remove it now I'm done with it?

Cheers!

Superuser is Root, you cannot delete it. Besides you may need it one day if you want to accept or deny a program root privileges for any reason.

Congratulations on your root. :)

ah i have to dig up this old thread, sorry :P my friend has a desire S, and wondering how to root it. its pretty straightforward on my galaxy but not so here, it seems? her phone says:

SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.90.0000
RADIO-30.03.02.15_M
eMMC-boot
March 10, 2011 (timestamp)

im guessing the S-ON part makes it harder to root this phone?
thanks!

No its very easy but, the other way around! S-off first then root.

S-off with AlpharevX then root with Gingerbreak.

oh i see. thanks! is there any step by step instruction page for apharevx? :D the page linked here does not really give detailed instructions n im a bit worried about harming someone else's phone. lol.

At the moment no "Revolutionary" is in beta and should only be used by developers for now.

Who told you its not a good phone to root?

Go here

Then go here and download the Gingerbreak1.20 .apk.

Read everything over and over, read it again.

S-off first. Root second!

Read it over again, have a cuppa. Do it!

You'll learn more and better, by doing it yourself!!!

If you need further pointers, come back here.

I apologise if this is a redundant question, but as a newbie to smart phones, the Android OS, and rooting in general, I was looking for a little advice. Having read an article that essentially explains what rooting is, and the basics steps it involves, I noticed that it compared rooting to jailbreaking an iphone. As far as i'm aware, that's illegal, so does rooting an Android phone essentially void any warranty you may have? As much as I think i'm beginning to appreciate the benefits of having a rooted phone, if something happened to it, I wouldn't want to be stuck with a brick.

Also, for someone who has never done something like this before, how simple is it to do? Is it a highly complex procedure with a lot of pitfalls, or is it as simple as "click this, install that, select this option" etc?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Most of the time as long as you don't develop a hardware fault your phone is recoverable back to stock so that it can go back to HTC. Rooting and S-off is quite easy and is well worth the risk in my opinion. Just read as much stuff as you can about it before jumping in.

If you need help, post a fresh post.

As InfernalByte said.

It's not illegal in any civil or criminal sense.

But rooting your phone does technically invalidate its warranty. This only becomes an issue if you need to have it repaired or replaced, because then the technicians will detect this. So, if ever you root this particular phone and need to send it in for repairs, etc, then you need to unroot it and undo whatever other ROM modifications you've made to it.

Rooting a phone is a fairly simple process. Doing a bit of reading around it and not just blindly following a set of instructions helps, so you know how to avoid problems or deal with them appropriately if they occur.

Rooting your phone is just the first part of making your phone much more customizable. Flashing different ROMS or deleting those stock apps you don't want is often the next step for many people. Again, knowing what you're doing and what tools and resources there are to do it with will help you avoid problems or be able to solve them for yourself should they occur.

So, yes, there are risks involved, but these can be greatly minimised by research and knowing what you're doing beforehand.

Right, First things first, well need to know your bootloader version, to find out what this is, turn your phone off, press and hold the down volume button and then press the power button at the top of the phone.

I did this, but all it does is turn the phone back on without any reception. Turning the phone off again, and turning it back on without holding the volume down fixes that, but it I haven't seen any text come up other than the splash screen for HTC and Telstra (the carrier that supplies the phone in Australia).

After that didn't work, I tried holding the volume up button, but all that did was kill the screen.

Am I doing something wrong, or is my phone a later build that doesn't accept this trick to find that info out? /nooblet

OK, when I say off I mean off HTC stock rom off function actually just Sleeps or Hibernates the phone, I can't remember how to power down correctly so you'll need to let the battery run flat. Once its flat remove and re-insert it, charge it while the phones off, once charged switch on by holding down the -Vol down button and the power button. You should then be in Hboot, a white screen with three skateboarders at the bottom.

N.B. Pulling the battery while the phone is on could damage your eMMC beyond repair.

P.S. If this is going anywhere start a new thread!
