New to the Android thing. Does the phone use wifi when it's available, or does it always use mobile data? Should I turn off the data when wifi is available or is that unnecessary?

Hey there and welcome to Android Forums. :)

If you've never connected to the wifi network, you'll need to manually connect.

After that, when your in range, it'll automatically connect to that network.

That's if your wifi is turned on.

Disabling mobile data isn't required, reason being when your connected to wifi, mobile data is disabled.

The wifi is on and the phone connected, but I was wondering if it might be worth it to disable the mobile data to save on the data plan usage while connected to wifi.

No it would be pointless actually, when you have an active wifi connection, the mobile data is completely disabled.

So when wifi is active, no mobile data will be used.
