Root newbie questions on installing custom ROMs

So I was researcing guides on installing custom ROMs (specifically Apex) and it seems that the majority of guides are using bootstrap. Is this necessary? I backed up all my apps with titanium backup.

Bootstrap makes a copy of your phones OS. Titanium is only for app backup. Use bootstrap.

Also, using DroidX Bootstrap is the best way to install a ROM. Don't use ROM Manager.

Bootstrap IS necessary, without it, you will never get your device into ClockworkMod Recovery, even if you have ROM Manager.

rom manager is not a bad thing to have, though the problem is it doesnt list which apps go on what type of system version, so thats where rom manager is not good, but if you know what your looking for then rom manager is great to have
