kelrick

Newbie
hi, looking for help for rooting my deise to get more storage space

i have spent days searching and there is so many different options
am looking for 1 that will work with hboot is 093.0001

my phone info is -
Version 2.2
Baseband - 32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30
Kernel - 2.6.32.15-g29e526b
Build number - 2.17.61.3 CL274424
Software - 2.17.61.3

Read the guides in the All Things Root Guide sticky thread, especially the Rooting FAQ. I'm not being dismissive when I say this - it really is better that you read and understand this stuff before messing with your phone. We'll happily clear up any questions you have left after you have read them. :)

I expect that unrevoked will work to root that phone.

That ROM should work on the Desire, but you will need to partition the SD card first. It won't fit in the Desire's memory, so needs to use a linux-format partition on the card to fit the rest of the ROM in. See the root memory faq for information on how to do this. This is a requirement of all ROMs that use later Sense versions than that which came on the Desire.

ok, tuf read, got most of it

not sure if a few things are out dated! tried search for NANDROID backup with no luck
so tried titanium backup (getting error, sorry, i could not acquire root privileges. this application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again.)

eh whats that mean?

A nandroid backup is a generic term for a backup made from recovery. So it's not an android app. Boot into recovery (boot while pressing the "volume down" key, then select recovery from the bootloader menu), then select "backup/restore" and make a backup. That backs up your ROM, apps, data.

You need a custom recovery to do this, i.e. can only do it after you are rooted.

Titanium backup is an app, but it requires root to operate. If you have rooted then try pressing the "problems" button on the main screen of Ti backup - that will offer to install busybox, which is basically a more complete set of linux instructions than Android comes with. But it sounds more likely to me that you are not rooted.

Nand and Ti backups are used for different things. A rooted user wants both.

If you want to make a backup before root, try MyBackup. I think that does about as good a job as any non-root app.

am happy to try and root my phone, only thing thats bugging me is if it doesnt work or i dont like it, i cant find my ROM for a reset!!

Yeah, that's because yours is Orange, and no 2.2 RUU was ever released/leaked.

But there is a solution: the official 2.3 upgrade, which you can obtain from Shipped ROMs, will restore an Orange desire to stock, unrooted condition, except running 2.3 and without Orange bloatware.

If you don't want to unroot but want to undo a ROM flash you can just take a nandroid backup after rooting, then restore that at any time. That will take you back to your current software, only with root.

All that rooting will do in itself is give you extra options. The performance/look/feel of the ROM won't change until you use it to make changes.

Nandroid isn't an app. When you make a system backup using a custom recovery that is called a nandroid backup. And the custom recovery is installed when you root.

supose you dont have a link to a nandroid backup download?

Before you go any further, it seems you havent read the rooting faq yet. Please read it. You can find it in the "all things root guide" sticky thread. You do not download a nandroid backup

Lets see if i have this right -

Installed HTC Sync and Removed HTC sync (leaving the drivers installed)
load UnrEVOked and plug Desire into usb

Download a ROM
Put it on your SD Card
Enter Recovery (power and down volume button)
Wipe Everything
Install Zip (ROM file) from SD Card
Select the ROM File
After installation reboot the device

and that should be my phone done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are actually 2 different things here.

Rooting:
Installed HTC Sync and Removed HTC sync (leaving the drivers installed)
load UnrEVOked and plug Desire into usb
Followed by running unrevoked to root and install a custom recovery.

Have you checked your erase size/PVT, as described in the FAQ? It's important as if you have an erase size 40,000 device (some PVT4 devices have this) then the recovery unrevoked installs by default should not be used.

Then after rooting there is installing a custom ROM:
Download a ROM
Put it on your SD Card
Enter Recovery (power and down volume button)
Wipe Everything
Install Zip (ROM file) from SD Card
Select the ROM File
After installation reboot the device

and that should be my phone done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That all seems fine. However, you should take a backup from recovery before wiping, and also install Titanium Backup before doing any of this and back up your apps and data (with separate backup for messages, contacts if not synced with google).

Some ROMs may require extra steps first. But it's all one step at a time. Root first, make backups, then worry about ROMs.

yea i downloaded (Terminal Emulator)
my erase size - 20000 and PVT4

back up, new i missed something
Titanium Backup free do or i got to get the PRO?

angain cheers for the responces

Yes, they have different roles, and you need both.

You'll probably want to back up messages too, which you don't want to use Ti for - it's fine if keeping same ROM, but not if changing ROMs as they get mixed up with stuff you don't want to restore between ROMs. I use SMS Backup+ for this (which I think SUroot originally recommended to me).

Followed everything to the letter... and worked great

but think i missed somthing!
i used dGB, but my memory is still only 107kb? i have a 16gb card so what did i miss to make my sd card part of my internal memory!

Not to sound cocky or anything but I'm sure I will.

Did you read about dgb at all? It doesn't use your SD card for storage, to get the most out of it you need to change your partitions, a lot of work by SU went into that ROM so you can use your SD as an SD.

sorry i tried another ROM before you replyed..

i installed MildWild (that has a a2sd)
i formated my card using minitools (gave myself 2gb at EXT4)
everything loaded great, but again its saying SD-Ext unavailable and internal storage 57mb!!!!

any help?

Minitool is a bag of shit, thats why. You need to fix it using GParted. Uninstall minitool... NOW!

i tryed
Activate sd-ext:Go to Setting>Applications>Development
Check SD-EXT
Reboot phone
Choose the default location for applications:
Go to Setting>Applications>Preferred install location
Choose sd-ext

and am getting - ERROR:-sd-ext disabled using atuo!!!!!!

whats that mean?

Yeah that program is a a bag of.. Umm.. Rubbish... Putting it politely.
I had the same issue as you, use Gparted, it's a bit more hassle but it works a treat.

Mainly because the partition you need is a Linux partition, and windows can't do it properly. Gparted is a Linux application but you can run it in a VM

Man did you even read my last post? If you're going to ask questions and ignore my answers, why should I even bother helping you?

Here it is ONE LAST TIME! Minitool partition wizard is a bag of shit. Although it told you it was successful, it was not, hence you have no working SD-ext partition so NO script will work for you.

You MUST use GPARTED to resolve the issue.
