Help Newbie with a (probably) dumb question about speed?

Newbie
Hi all. This is my first Android phone and I love it so far. Have been reading the forum for a while and finding it very helpful.
I have seen lots of complaints about the speed not being as advertised or having trouble getting the 4g speeds that you were expecting? Then there are those finding out that their SIM cards are the cause of the problem.
Not having a basis for comparison, I am not sure how to tell if my phone is under-performing or not? Seems okay to me, but I just don't have any clue. If there is a problem with my SIM card I would like to figure that out so I can get it replaced if necessary.
No flames for being such a complete newbie please.

well, what are your download/upload speeds in your area?
4g LTE speeds?
OR
3g speeds?

it can be relative to your LTE coverage & if you're on the outskirts/border of LTE and 3g

note: do NOT use speedtest app--as it is flawed. in your browser, go to something like speakeasy.net/speedtest and find the closest server to your location. tap it & record the results.
in charlotte, i chose the Atlanta server/host---and i've gotten 39 down & 5 up on full LTE just five minutes ago

I am in downtown Minneapolis, should be good 4G. The 4g is showing in the status bar with the arrows blinking. I just got 19.39down and 2.76up. Will have to try it when I am not in this building though, it is the old shop building at the U of M and phone reception etc has always been dodgy. If I can't get better results elsewhere I will head into Verizon.

Wait, you think you're under-performing at those speeds?

Nope. Just found the specs and realized that I should be fine. Sorry!!! *blush*
Told ya I was a newbie! :o

Imagine if you were running 68kbps Down and 1467kbps Up like I am... :(
(but seriously... what's going on here)
Obviously NO 4G for me, whatsoever.

Edit: on 3G my highest was 2.24 Mb/s DOWN, 0.69 Mb/s UP, but it's averaging around 1.3 DOWN/ 0.60 UP

My terrible scores are from being on 1X
