Hi,

I just bought a flytouch 3 16Gb from chinagrabber.
After i oppened the box i tried to charge the unit but the charger was dead. While i wait that chinagrabber give me another i bought a replacement in a electronic store and im starting to tweek my pad.
The information it give me is the folowing:

Model Number

DISCO10

Android version

2.2-20110503

Kernel version

2.6.32.9
zjd@dtlinuxserver#1

Build number FRF85B

Ive read alot of post on foruns, but im a bit mixed about some concepts.

Firts of all what does the "About device" information means?

Is there a deference between firmwares and roms or are they the same things?

What roms or/and firmware updates should i make to my pad?

Thanks in advance

What do you want to do with it? Are you a tweaker or do you just like to turn it on and let it fly? IF you just want it to go Tim's 5a is a good place to start.

If you like to play around in it, you can root it yourself and install a few apps to get the most out of it. For root instructions go here , nice simple video, just try not let the guys voice put you into a coma, LOL. The two apps Launcher pro and Z4root can be found with a quick google search.

After rooting I install Optimizer Toolbox and Cachemate for Root, and EStaskmanager.. I run Optimizer Toolbox once in a while to auto teak the tab but during the first run you can set apps to load or not load at boot, set battery savers, and uninstal/install apps including system apps. You create widget shortcuts to Cachemate and EStaskmanager on the desktop. Cache will clean up junk files, ES will clear apps from memory.

Hi,

Thanks for your ansker.
What about the diference between a firmware update and a rom?
And that data from my pad?

Thanks in advance

I am not really sure what ROM means but don;t confuse youself. A ROM is just a modified version of android, thats what I have in mind at least. Firmware on the other hand is the actual version of Android.

The best thing with Tim5a ROM is that its pre-rooted. To explain you what root is in a short phrase: It gives you Super User access. I can only think an example with my phone to explain to you what SU access is. I could add or remove mp3 ringtones to it but it had like a ton of ringtones by the company already in it and no matter what I did I could not remove them. As soon as I rooted it I could delete them normally like a normal file. Its like rooting makes you an administrator with the power to add or remove programs, folders and files without being restricted. One of the things I added on my tablet thanks to it being rooted are the "live wallpapers" option. I am pretty sure rooting can be done without Tim5a's rom but installing Tim5a is as easy as extracting the 2 files from the zip file onto your sd card, sliding the sd card in the tablet and turning it on. After that everything is done automatically and all you have to do it wait.

It has been reported a lot also that Tim5a makes the tablet faster and more responsive and even makes the sound louder.

I am not really sure about the data since I used my tab it hthe stock rom for less than half a day so I do not know what was kept and what not.

Android version

2.2-20110503

Unfortunately the later firmware updates don't seem to alter the Android Version data in the About Device screen so it is not a reliable indicator as to what firmware you have installed..for example.. I have Tims 4e installed (I think!) and the About Device still reports Version 2.2-20110503 ...you just need to remember what firmware you flashed last!

But it is the 2.2 from that date. He is only altering that firmware making it better and not using the newer one. Even if his file uses the latest date I am pretty sure Tim's Rom is based on 2.2-20110503.

I would have thought that every time someone makes a change to the firmware and then releases it to the great unwashed masses that it should get a new version number, that way you know what you have installed. The version number 2.2-20110503 was the last official release (before Tims releases became the official releases!) This doesn't seem to be the case though.

True, I was wondering until 2 days ago if i have 5a or 4e cause I was not that sure. Tim5a came the day I flashed and all. I realized I have 5a cause I found the actual file on my hard drive. Maybe he is unable to change that version? (or lazy?) Or maybe he does not change it so people will know he did not add any features that were added on the official realease after that date? Aw well who knows.
