Next OTA...

Impending OTA made me take the plunge and root. Now, only three days later, I don't see how I could go back to an unrooted TB(or maybe any phone, for that matter).

You can reject the OTA yes and hope you don't accidently accept it at some point. If you do then there is no going back. You can root and then wait for a stock rooted rom to show up and you will be on HTC's GB but have all the perks of root access. I would suggest anyone who is on the fence should take the plunge before the OTA starts because one error in selecting to accept the OTA can make your phone always on stock firmware.

You make a very good point.
I forget that you can have the stock and freedom.
Only negative seems just having to unroot if you need to swap out for replacement :-)

OK here's a question can you save the data pre-root that is not google backed up and restore it after root and rom installed?
Thanks,
Bryan

You should ask this in the Thunderbolt All Things Root forum. Those guys are the greatest and you'll get an answer much faster. There is also a thread there that I believe outlines how to do this, but I haven't read it. It's right there in the title, though.

HTC is trying to make sure they don't release an update that is going to make e angry customers more angry, GB will not be an update that people will notice very much on the TB. When Froyo came out and it was required to use flash. GB isn't required for any major apps/features that are out currently. With the sense bloatwareUI :) staying at 2.1 then you really will not notice any difference between your phone before and after the update, except maybe Verizon will add some more bloatware to give you less internal memory.

Oh yeah I forgot to add the only big change will be, you phone will be unrootable unless a new exploit is found, yeah great update.

Atrix, and photon have been rooted and they are on gb.

I haven't tested it myself but it appears that barrier has been broken Easy pre-root backup with adb - xda-developers

Looks like you flash nandroid to the phone via ADB with the exploits then run a nandroid before flashing any RUU files, you should then be able to restore those later after rooting in recovery. Not the easiest thing to comprehend if you do not have any root experience but not something impossible to get if you follow directions.

And the restoring to non root if you get a replacement is only if it is a warranty replacement, not so with insurance, if you mess up your phone and the phone is rooted the insurance is there to replace it but you owe the deductible

Different manufacturers have different measures against rooting. Both those phones are Moto phones and the method of rooting either would not be the same as rooting an HTC phone. If you look at the LG revolution it is also on GB and can be rooted with old scripts like rageagainstthecage most other manufacturers have blocked that from rooting their devices. If you want to get a picture of how rooting will be done on the bolt after the GB update you should look at phones like the EVO 4G and other HTC devices.
