Help Nexus 4 Mic level? (clipping)

I have recorded a few concerts now and they are all garbage because the mic on the Nexus 4 is set too high.

Is there and app or some other way I can lower the mic at concerts to prevent the clipping?

I had a similar issue when I tried to record a performance and was seated too close to the sound system. It's not an issue I've had with other phones or indeed with my N4 when I have not been so close to the speakers.

Can't see anything on the phone about controlling the mic level, unfortunately.
