Nexus 4 or wait for this "Nexus 5"

My contract ends soon and im thinking of exiting it and just buying retail Nexus 4. Is the nexus 4 old?Is this nexus 5 worth waiting? Plz give me some thoughts

Welcome to the forums, Redwing!
Have never used a Nexus 4, but my year and a half old Galaxy Nexus is humming right along and still has solid development if you're looking to root and ROM.
It's an incredible deal too if you're already on a GSM carrier (I'm not, otherwise I'd jump on it in a second).
Thing is, we know next to nothing about the Nexus 5. Only rumor I know of is LG is on the top of the list to produce it. Other than that, simply speculation. Biggest concern I'd have about going with an N4 this late and wanting to upgrade early is its resale value won't be as high as previous Nexus devices simply because it's so cheap to begin with.
Best of luck!

It looks like they are on a yearly cycle with the Nexus phone series (November-December), announcement would probably be in October. If you can wait then do it, if you really need a phone there are plenty of deals out there. Might be able to pick up a used S3 for less then a Nexus 4 for the intern.

There's a google edition of the S4 coming soon. will be S4 running stock Android.

I can't imagine the nexus 5 being any better, they might as well just call the Google edition Galaxy S4 the Nexus 5. :D

Be careful what you wish for.

There is one possible difference: the N4 has been sold at bare cost price, the S4 Google Edition is being sold at unsubsidised retail price. If a Nexus 5 appears in 5-6 months time at an N4-like price that may be significant. But timing and price are both ifs in that sentence. We don't know what will happen.

Depends when you need the phone. If you know something better is due soon, then it's worth delaying. Otherwise there's always something better coming some time, and you can wait forever if you go that way.

I would wait, the Nexus 4 is half way through it's life since it was released 6 months ago.

That being said, I got mine the day it was released and I still love it. I wouldn't trade it for any other phone on the market right now.

Well it is still a Galaxy S4 regardless of what they call it so price will be higher.

Google are always looking to keep prices low so I don't expect much from their devices, Nexus 4 was a bit of a surprise but probably just good timing with availability of Qualcomms S4's.

Nexus 5 will either be Snapdragon 600/800 or Tegra 4/Tegra 4i imo.

Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum and I'm looking to make my first purchase of an android phone. I became interested in the Nexus 4 given it's awesome specifications and low price, but I am wondering if it is worth waiting for the Nexus 5 (assuming one is released).

I wouldn't say that I am a heavy phone user, but something tells me that it would not be in my best interest to purchase the Nexus 4 when the Nexus 5 is just around the corner.

The only thing I fear is that the Nexus 5 won't be sold at the same price point as the Nexus 4. I don't need a phone at the moment, at least not until September. Even then, I could hold off for a few months.

What do you recommend?

The Nexus 4 in terms of performance is right up there with the best available right now, for the price it's a great phone.

Reason it's not as popular as Google would like it to be is the lack of sdcard slot, removable battery, limited internal storage and average camera.

I wouldn't expect the Nexus 5 to be out until November. Also, don't wait for the Nexus 5 expecting it to be a CDMA carrier like Verizon or Sprint because you'll end up disappointed. The 4 is a great phone and since you don't need one until September, there might be some more rumors out on the Nexus 5 by then.

I don't see the next nexus not going to Verizon and Sprint. Especially verizon. I don't see the next nexus phone not going to the largest carrier in the business. I can only imagine how many sales were lost by the 4 by not being available on Verizon and Sprint.

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm actually from Canada. If I purchased the Nexus 4, I would plan to go with a company called Wind Mobile. Could you confirm that the Nexus 4 would work with Wind Mobile? Here is a link to a wikipedia page that shows details regarding their network.

Yes, the Nexus 4 does support the 1700/2100 AWS that Wind Mobile uses. The Nexus device is made so that it is pentaband HSPA in order to operate on as many carriers as possible.

Google tired playing nice with Verizon and Sprint with the Gnex and it was a horrible failure. Google's vision for android and the nexus devices runs counter to Verizon's and Sprint's vision. Google stands for open source, unlocked devices, and overall user freedom. Verizon & Sprint are CDMA carriers that stand for locked devices, locked network, and control over everything leaving none to the user. I don't imagine they'll play nice until VoLTE gets up and Google can make a device that doesn't use the CDMA network so that it abides by standard GSM practices.

In the end the amount of money that can be made will settle their differences.

Maybe, and that would certainly come to the joy of many of their customers. But seeing as how Google is selling the Nexus devices at essentially the break even point, there isn't much money to be made unless they increase the price.
