ktfrancey

Lurker
so i recently downloaded avatar on to my nexus 4 and i decided i didnt like it anymore. so desperately i tried to get it off and i ended up soft bricking my phone. i can access both the download and bootloader but not anything else. if i try to go to recovery mode it has a picture of an android laying on his back. i read that if i hold down the buttons while i see this i can get a pop up menu to factory reset, however when i press them the phone just simpley turns off. i've tried flashing it with odin and to my luck nothing has happened. when i turn the phone on all i get is the x floating there ive had it on for as long as 20 mins like this. any help is great thanks!

Moved to the Nexus 4 section, thanks. :)

First of all, what's avatar? How did you try to remove it?

Odin is for Samsung handsets btw, so won't work. You should also be able to factory reset from the bootloader btw (as far as I can remember anyway).

As El Presidente said, Odin is for Samsung phones only. Are you sure it's a nexus 4 and not a Galaxy Nexus? Either way, the method to restore is the same, just a different factory image and drivers.

Welcome to Android Forums, ktfrancey! :)

El Presidente is correct, you can access recovery from the bootloader. First, turn your phone completely off. Then hold the volume down button and press and hold the power button until the phone vibrates. You'll be at the screen with the android robot lying on his back and it will say "Start" at the top.

Use the volume keys to cycle through the options until you see "Recovery Mode" and press the power button. That should boot you into recover and you should see the option to reset there. Again, use the volume keys to highlight the option you want and the power button to select it. You may have to confirm it a few times, but it will reset.

Good luck

I've tried to reset my N4 via recovery mode before and all I get is no command come up.

Hmm, it might be that your recovery is messed up. You could try using the Nexus 4 Toolkit to install a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP).

What you will do is download the toolkit and install it. Plug the phone into your PC and boot the phone into fastboot (the android robot on his back that says "Start"). Launch the toolkit. There will be a few questions to answer. If it doesn't detect your phone, unplug it and you will need to install the drivers (option 1.) Then reboot your PC and then try again.

You will have the option to install a custom recovery and the option which one you want. Pick the one you like and install it. Your phone should reboot.

Shut off your phone. Boot holding vol. down/power and now try to select recovery mode. You should see a new recovery screen and reset should be an option.

Don't worry about my last post. Just being plain stupid!:o

Does that mean you got into recovery and were able to reset it? :)

I'd still take a look at the Nexus Toolkit. It's a handy little thing to have on hand, especially if you are going to be modifying your phone frequently.

Yes I was able to do what I had to do. I'm sure in the past it never worked before. I've got the Nexus toolkit on my pc.

You could just download the factory image from Google and use Wug's Toolkit to flash it. That's what I did when I boot-looped my N4.
