Help Nexus 4 stock email app

Valdarooga

Lurker
When I try to set up my work pop3 email, the app keeps complaining about wrong username or password even though they are correctly typed. I gave up and installed K9 Mail and it was smooth sailing! So what's wrong with the native (stock) mail app?

The stock e-mail app is pretty terrible in my opinion. Exchange e-mail is terrible, and yahoo mail has random issues with login trouble as well. k-9 and touchdown are much better.

I use the stock email client for several accounts, POP3 and IMAP, with no problems. Used it since Android 1.0 with no problems. Just needs a 'Select all' feature - an odd omission.

I've had issues with the app recognising passwords however I just ignored it and my mail still comes through on Hotmail and Gmail (though Gmail doesn't sync automatically for some reason)

Luckily Gmail has its own app, allowing automatic sync. As for the stock email app, once it says "wrong username or password", there is no way for me to continue set-up of POP3.

It might be that the server or port number are wrong or you have SSL on when your POP3 account wants it off (or vice versa). Ditto certificates.

It might be worth google-ing the settings for your POP3 provider (if you're on Hotmail I could tell you the settings I use). I know I had to do that when I got my first droid.

Well, the fact is that everything worked correctly using K-9 Mail. Same port number (110), no SSL, etc. So, like others point out, it is the stock email app which has a problem.

That does not prove it is defective. Different email clients often use different setups. If that setup worked with the stock client but not K9 would K9 then have a 'problem'? Not necessarily.
