Help Nexus 4/T-Mobile question

xrealtalk

Newbie
With the Nexus 4 dropping down to $200, I'm definitely getting one.
I want to get the T-Mobile $30 plan, it says 5g of 4G web, is web the same thing as data? And after I use 5g, what happens?

*UPDATE ON BOTTOM*

Yes, web is the same thing as data. After you hit 5GB of data used, your speeds on T-Mobile's network get slowed down to the equivalent of EDGE (2G) speeds for the remainder of the billing period. However you aren't cut off or charged overages for it.
I have this plan and it's awesome.

Are you talking about a prepaid plan? I only see 3 options for plans on TMO's website - $50 for 500mb, $60 for 2.5 GB and $70 for unlimited. I just ordered my 16GB N4 and have been trying to decide the cheapest/best option for coverage.

Wow okay that's awesome! Thanks a lot for the info! I can't wait to get it!!!!

Haha yeah the prepaid one! There's a $30 one but you have to find it, 100 minutes, unlimited talk/web w/ 5g of 4g data or web or whatever

On the web page that describes those three options, scroll all the way down past the "more plan options" section and past the "pay by the day" section. You will see a very brief mention of the $30 per month - unlimited Web and text with 100 minutes talk plan.

You will need to get a micro-sim starter kit from T-Mobile. Check the web for discount codes on these; when I got mine, 99SIM brought the price down from $10 to 99 cents. The standard shipping, in my experience, was very slow, so don't rely on it if you're in a hurry.

Why so? I have a phone right now with only 2gb and I don't even use all of that.

bjacks12 is referring to the phone model - it comes with either 8GB and 16GB on-board storage. Given there's no SD card, I think bjacks12 is absolutely right :D I bought the 16GB model and have never regretted the extra few bucks it cost.

Have to agree with you about data though: I've been clinging onto my old unlimited phone plan and just switched my home broadband back to unlimited but in fact, I only use about 300MB mobile and 25GB broadband a month - I have no idea why I just have to be unlimited

Mind you, my phone plan costs me

By UK standards, that's a reasonable chunk - very few plans come with more than 1GB here ;)

200GB

I'm guessing you stream a lot of content :D

I could get by with 1GB probably 90% of the time, so it would probably be worth it to eat the overages to only have to pay $10-15. I'm currently pay $65 for two phones and that's probably the cheapest smartphone plan around. Considering that I was paying $170 for two phones, it's a bargain

It's a combination of streaming content and remote desktopping my tablet to my desktop when I'm not home. Splashtop uses probably 70-80GB of that 200.

Will I be able to get the $30 plan without going into store or anything? I want to just order a sim card from t-mobile and activate when it arrives in the mail. How do I go about doing so?

JUST ORDERED MY NEXUS 4! :D
Also a micro sim activation kit from t-mobile!
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a valid coupon so I had to pay $10.80 for the kit, but oh well!
Where can I find steps for activating and such for when I receive all my stuff?

The kit will give you instructions on how to get activated. It's more or less go to a Web page, enter some info, select your plan, fill it up either with a refill card or credit card and you're done.

As stated, it will come with instructions. I don't know if they have improved, but I'd say it's 50/50 the SIM will activate online. You'll probably have to call CS, but it's still an easy process.

I'm trying to order 2 more sims from T-Mobile for prepaid but they're saying they're $10 each now, whereas I paid $1 last time. Anyone have a link to get them cheaper?

The sim card I ordered on the Web took so long to be shipped that I was about to be charged for another month by my old carrier, so I resorted to going to the T-Mobile store to show them the order and try to talk them into just giving me one. When I told them that I wanted the $30 100 minute plan, the new-hire clerk I was dealing with hadn't heard of it, and another clerk brusquely said that you can't enroll in that plan in-store, only on the Web. Whether that's correct, or they just wanted to give me the brush-off because it was closing time and they saw they weren't going to make any money off me, I don't know. In the end, they did give me a sim, but not the full "sim starter kit", so I ended up having to deal with the overseas tech support people on the phone to get the service going.

It was just lazy clerks. Unless the changed the policy, I bought and activated in-store for the $30 plan.

The $30 100 minute/5GB data plan has always been a web exclusive for T-Mobile, and used to be a Wal-Mart exclusive if you buy a new phone from them.

That doesn't mean no store has ever done it, though.

Some people used to buy the cheapest T-Mobile phone from Wal-Mart to register, then just take the SIM out and put it in their real phone. That was probably before the $1 SIM specials online, though.

Yeah I thought it was only a dollar, too bad I didn't pick up a bunch back then. I wonder if they'll give me just a couple SIMs at the store to activate at home or do I need the whole kit?

Also I'm only using one phone right now so the tmobile sim I was using before for the $30 plan is just sitting in a drawer. It's been there for a few months. Can I still use it for moving my other number over to tmobile or is it only good for the number I had on it before?
