Root Nexus 5 Rooting Guide

Doing it the manual method provided in the guide no, but if you use the cf auto root method, then yes. The problem with the cf method is that it might not work once the bootloader is updated with an update. However the manual method will always work.

i heard it mentioned somewhere that CF SuperSu has a root survival mode now. could be a premium feature. what are your thoughts about it?
thanks

It's had survival as a premium feature for a while, but it just recently added support for upgrading to 4.4. On a Nexus device it isn't really helpful because it's so easy to get root back if the bootloader is unlocked. On other devices that needed an exploit to get root, and may not have a way to root on 4.4, it's a huge feature.

a follow up question....
in your reply to 'lettuce' you said "it might not work once the bootloader is updated with an update" . is it possible for the bootloader be re-locked with an update?
i just only need root for couple of apps etc so i am contemplating to go with CF-autoroot without any custom recovery for now. if bootloader gets relocked with update, i have to unlock again meaning wiped phone, then i have to weigh my option.
thanks again.

The bootloader will only relock if you do it. However a substantial update will likely update the bootloader and could render the cf auto root method patched and thus useless. But it won't affect the unlocked status.

hmm, then all i have to do is use adb/fastboot to istall a custom recovery like twrp, flash SuperSu from recovery to gain root again correct? as the bootloader should be unlocked i have nothing to worry then about dataloss. is my reasoning making sense?
thanks

Yes.

You'll NEVER have to worry about how to root.

That's always how its done if you lose it. That's part of what makes a nexus a nexus

mine is supposed to ship on the 3rd :D . i already downloaded and installed sdk tools and driver. pathetic isn't it? :p

well my prevail is rooted so i had to use odin but this is nexus 5 and an early christmas gift so i am being cautious. i have been reading and re-reading here and xda for last three weeks.

Its VERY hard to brick a nexus. Worst case scenario you flash the factory image.

All is well my friend

If you have ANY specific questions as far as doing different things, do not hesitate to start a thread. We've got plenty of knowledgeable people here

It's probably near impossible now too as it supports both CDMA and gsm.

Still possible, all it would take is a flash of a something meant for another chipset for it to happen. Or if you decide, for whatever reason, to invoke the command "fastboot erase bootloader" and then reset your device.

Due to problems when previously trying to root I had to flash the factory image, and that all went fine, and my bootloader is still unlocked. Am I right in assuming that if I flash a recovery and the SU files, this won't factory reset my phone will it? [After flashing the factory image, I needed a working phone so it got set up over the next few days of using it and now it's set up how I want it!]. So confirmation on that would be appreciated.

** Edited. Discovered I was asking a lot of questions that had already been answered **

Thanks guys.

I want to install Franco Kernel, is this really as easy as installing the zip in a recovery and rebooting the phone? Does it do a factory reset? Will I lose my phone's set up? Is it ok to use Franco Kernel with the factory image or does it have to be used with a custom ROM or does it not matter? Will I see benefits using Franco Kernel with the factory image? And finally how do I revert back to the stock kernel? Just flash the factory image again?

Thanks guys.
Correct, it's the bootloader unlocking that invokes the factory reset. Since that is already done, flashing recovery and root won't touch your data. Still good to wipe cache and dalvik though, but that doesn't touch your data either.

Bigxie has released the 4.4.1 stock ROM rooted and updated baseband/radio.

[ROM][STOCK] Android 4.4.1 KOT49E - Rooted/Busybox/Odexed (12/6/13) - xda-developers

I don't know if this is right but apparently you can simply wipe dalvik and cache and install the ROM in recovery (with or without the baseband update) and job done.

If you're using a different kernel, if you flash a new ROM in recovery I think it overwrites the kernel to stock 4.4.1 kernel so no need to flash factory images beforehand.

I think that's right but can anyone confirm this?

I got a question how much storage space should i have after the whole process?I have a 32g, total space says 26.76 available but then i was about a gig short before installing anything after i unlocked the bootloader and installed the recovery and su.

Storage shouldn't change significantly between before and after rooting

28gb free out of 32 sounds completely normal

(I've got 26 something available to the user)

Its exactly 26.76 total out of the 32 and 26.47 available after all the google core apps. I cant remember how much i had before, so the OS takes up 5.24gigs that seems like a lot.

Plus whatever data you have on the phone....

Is the rom and/or gapps still on your storage? Or a nandroid backup? If you didn't delete the rom and gapps immediately upon flashing the rom, there's a gigga or two right there probably...
