Help Nexus 7 keyboard -- microphone icon key missing

kozakid

Lurker
Suddenly, and inexplcably, the microphone icon key is missing from my Google Nexus 7 keyboard, which means I no longer have the voice-to-text function. The microphone icon was located at the bottom left of the keyboard, two keys to the left of the spacebar. Now a comma is pictured there and the microphone icon key has disappeared.

I called ASUS support which was unable to figure out how to solve this problem. The ASUS tech told me to check with GOOGLE support. That's when I decided to post at this forum, hoping to get a quicker answer.

I removed some recently installed apps, but that didn't work. Also, I went into Settings > Language and input, and noticed that "Google voice typing" was already checked. I didn't try making any changes in Settings.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may have an answer. Thank you very much.

(My second-generation Nexus 7 is fully-updated.)

Hello there kozakid:)
Are you speaking about your 2012 edition or your 2013 edition?
I see you have both listed in your profile and wanted some clarification is all ;)

Edit: I'm thinking its your 1st gen Nexus and making the statement about your 2nd gen Nexus being updated, doesn't have that issue?

Thank you very much for your prompt response. I understand and am sorry about the confusion.

Actually, the problem is with my 2013 Nexus 7, although I don't believe the recent upgrade had anything to do with the suddenly missing microphone key. I'd greatly appreciate any offers of help.

Thanks again.

Ah, understood:)
Not sure, (as I cannot do this on my device) but is there an option to uninstall any updates to the google keyboard?
Perhaps the keyboard itself auto updated without your knowledge?
Also, I moved your thread slightly, over to the Nexus 7 (2013) model forum;)

Thanks again. Unfortunately, if there is an uninstallation method I don't know how to access it. I hope it won't be necessary to do a factory reset just to retrieve the mike key. Would it even be possible to remove the recent 4.4.4 upgrade, then reinstall it? Of course, even if that's possible, I have no idea that it would solve my problem. I'm not savvy enough technically to even guess at a fix. My feeling was that there should be a rather simple solution, but perhaps not. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Just for the heck of it, I switched to the Google keyboard. I see the microphone icon next to my word prediction box

I realize I have a different device but ya never know:D

Well, at least that's some progress. When I just attempted to compose an e-mail I noticed that the mike key has moved up to the position you've indicated. Only a couple of days ago it was down just to the left of the space bar. I may not have noticed the change if you hadn't pointed it out. For whatever reason, the location of the key has changed.

The remaining problem, though, is with "Find in Page" on a website. I still don't see the mike icon when I try "Find in Page." Perhaps it's only temporarily out-of-sight. Maybe there's an easy way to bring it into view. Of course, I can still type whatever I want to find, but it's much more convenient using the mike.

Huh, yeah I don't see the mike button either on "Find in Page". odd. I looked around for it but haven't come across it if I wanted to speak some text. :o

Yeah, I'm really puzzled. Unless I'm dreaming, I'm sure I used this function very recently, perhaps yesterday morning--and now it's gone. In case we can't find an answer before bedtime, I plan to call Google early tomorrow. As I mentioned earlier, ASUS said I should call GOOGLE. I just hope that the mike button hasn't been permanently removed.

I was having the same issue locating the microphone, but I just found how to get it back.

Go to Settings > Language & input > under "Keyboard & Input Methods" click Default and a pop up should appear. Click on "Set up input methods" and then check "Google voice typing."

The mic will then show up by the prediction box, as shown in Mikestony's screenshot, except when you are typing in the Chrome's search bar, then it's located in the search bar itself.

Hope that helps.
