Hi all. Around the end of this month, my dad is going to buy for me a tablet as a reward. Actually, he gave me a choice of a new phone to replace my only 6 month old phone but I felt that it is better to buy a tablet because it is cheaper (I do not want to waste my dad's money).

So far, I have thought of many tablets - transformer, ipad, ipad mini etc. And finally, I have narrowed down to the nexus 7 and the galaxy tab 2 7.0. I thought of getting the tab2 8gb and then expanding it with a microsd because it would be cheaper than getting a nexus 7 32gb. I loved the tab2 for its design. However, the nexus 7 is also great because it is pure android and it will get newer android versions as soon as Google launches one.

I'm still stuck in a dilemma. Which one is better for me?

I loved my Nexus 7,but I would check out each one in person. Also Google I/O is coming up, their may be a new Nexus 7,might want to keep that in mind.

i moved the thread to the device forum, since that is what the discussion is about.

tab 2 is slower then the nexus 7 IMO and it is much older then the nexus 7. but the lack of a sd card can be a deal breaker for some.....for me i would go with the nexus 7 just on the fact(like you said) it will get more updates and i think since samsung has release the note 8 now that the tab 2 will go eol soon(no evidience, just a gut feeling).

That new nexus 7 with 3g may take forever to arrive in Singapore and it will be sure to be very costly.

The tab 3 would replace the tab 2, I guess. The lack of sd card slot is a really dead giveaway but I think I wouldn't mind it if the nexus 7 I got is 32gb. However, I can just grab a tab 2 8gb, put a sd card and mod! In the end, it would be cheaper than getting a 32gb nexus 7.

i guess if you are going for the "best bang for your buck" then the tab 2 would definitely be the device to get. i would definitely look into rooting it and see if you can increase performance for it though. my friend has the tab 2 10" versions and it is sooo sloww compared to my transformer infinity.

I actually looked into the 'ipad killer transformer' series at first. After that I realised that it doesn't comes with a keyboard and the tablet itself is expensive.

but the keyboard dock is soooo cool. i can understand that it is expensive combo, but best buy was having a sale where the keyboard was free if you bought the tablet....not sure if it is still offered or not.

i love my transformer!!!!

I'd pick a Tab2 16GB. You'll want tge extra space for apps since you can't move them to SD card. Then you can keep media in the card. The difference in speed isn't a big deal IMO. I have a dual core s3mini while my younger brother has a quad core s3 and the difference IMO isnt to great a deal for me. My dual core Tab Plus is also doing great.

Tab plus? Is that the first generation of the galaxy tab with honeycomb?

How long have you been using your tab? Sorry for asking so many questions because I want to buy a tablet that is essential and long lasting. I don't want a tablet that would end up getting the screen smashed (by me) like my Archos tablet within a few days around 2010.

No problem. I've been using it for over a year now. No screen protector and no scratches yet. But I'm a bit for taking care of my stuff. It's actually got better specs than a Tab 2.

But I think that the tab plus is certainly obsolete.

My dad told me to widen my choices and also consider the note 10.1 or other tabs. He also said that the ipad mini is also a good choice. However, I find it so overused and I wouldn't want to be seen as a 'typical fanboy'. So that is already striked out.

Nearing obsolete bit not quite. It's still able to run any app thrown at it. Actually jellybean has been released for it in Europe. Also it depends on your definition of obsolete. My definition is that when it cannot run mainstream functions anymore, that's obsolete.

My definition of obsolete is the support received from the manufacturer. For example, the galaxy s2 is not exactly obsolete even though it is quite old thanks to the release of jelly bean. This just shows that despite its age, it is still capable of running jelly bean.

Anyway, have you heard of this tab 7.7? I read many mixed reviews about it but many suggests that it is better than tab 2 7.0.

The tab 7.7 has even better hardware than my Tab Plus, bit sadly from what I hear it never got past honeycomb. Take a Tab 2 if you're worried of official update support, or wait for the Tab 3 which has already been announced. But in your place I'd pick the Note 8.0.

I just want something that is inexpensive yet long lasting. I guess with that, I should go with the tab 2.

However, I am still stuck here. Should I go for the miniature 7" or the gigantic 10.1"

Depends on what you think is more important: portability or easy readability. A bigger screen makes viewing things easier, but is heavier and more annoying to carry around.
