Root Nexus 7 Rooted

On your galaxy nexus, when you're messing around with custom ROMs, is it possible to factory reset without wiping the internal memory? I'm used to having my titanium backups of my apps on the sdcard and just restoring it from there to a new ROM.

A factory reset on the GNex leaves the SDCard partition in tact.

Unlocking the bootloader will wipe the SDCard partition. That is entirely different than a factory reset.

Thanks colchiro. I knew when I got my GNex that step on was the bootloader so I didn't have to worry about backing things up. Glad you cleared that up for folks here.

Nope, not the same. Unlocking the bootloader is something you do once. A factory reset is something you do when you device has gone awry.
 
Can someone explain the main benefits of rooting my nexus 7 now I have it, will I lose anything that I've paid for and are there are risks ?

If you unlock the bootloader you will have to reinstall all of your apps (it's really simple, more of an annoyance). All of the stuff that you got free with it and your play credit will still be there. Anything you paid for is tied to your Google account, so even if you had another Android phone you wouldn't have to pay for it again. You could use it on your phone and tablet.

Benefits are that you can perform backups of your entire system and apply customization's that will really make your phone your own. Think different color schemes, different dock bars, etc. As time goes on, new kernels will be released by developers that usually increase performance while simultaneously increasing battery life by overclocking when the system needs power and underclocking when it doesn't. So if you are playing a graphics intense game it may throttle up to 1500 mhz whereas if you are reading a book it may idle back to 600mhz (note: you need to unlock the bootloader to flash kernels).

As far as risks, there are very few. It is really hard to truly "brick" a Nexus device. If you do root, step one following that is to perform a nandroid backup as this is the simplest way to recover from any issues. Also, perform one before you apply any system changes.
 
Unlocking your bootloader probably erases your sdcard as well.

Wugs toolkit can backup and restore your entire sdcard. :D
