Nexus 7 touchscreen dead spots

So i've noticed a very strange issue with my Nexus 7. If I wake the tablet up while touching the screen I get some very strange touchscreen behavior. It's almost as if there are dead areas on the touchscreen that don't respond to touch. If I put it back to sleep and wake it up without touching the screen the issue is gone. I've made a youtube video demonstrating the issue.

Has anybody else experienced this issue?

I feel like I may have seen this. I will report back by testing your method for duplicating this "problem."

Edit: I replicated this. Don't know what is going on.

reminds me of a glitch on the game cube where holding a button down when turning on the system would reverse the button cycle. I'll try to replicate the issue. Sounds like a software glitch though

I'm just glad to know i'm not the only one experiencing this. It can be very frustrating because you can very easily trigger this issue by accident when waking the device. Hopefully it is just a simple software fix and not a hardware issue.

Seems I got the same issue with my Nexus 7 too.

I started worrying when I noticed how unresponsive the touchscreen was, and how I read on another forum about users having issues with the glass separating on their N7's.

But looks like I'm having the same issue as in that YouTube video.

Trying to duplicate your problem.
Did you really wake it with your finger or did you press on the power button? I have to use the power button.

I wake to device using the power button. The issue is triggered while waking it with the power button while touching the screen at the same time.

i am wondering if the screen tries to re-calibrate when the device gets woken back up. similar to ta previous post about holding a down a button on the gamecube at startup, on the PS2 if you held one of the analog sticks in a set direction on startup, it thought that was the new "0" position until restart.

Have you tried holding your finger in a different spot on the screen during wakeup to see if the "dead" spot moves?

Ill will be investigating this when i get home later since I got delivery confirmation :-)

I have had this go on a little bit, usually I find that I was touching the screen when I powered on. Guessing its a software thing. Early adopter pains.

it looks like, as you have already read, that is worth the wait. My problem now, is i have a 2 hour commute home when i eave in 20 minutes...then I can try to take a look at this dead area issue. If it's what i think it is, it could probably be resolved with a software update.

OK, I've been playing with for an hour now, and I cannot replicate the issue in either landscape or portrait. I am not experiencing any other listed defects either so far...I must be lucky.

I'm jealous :p

I finally got around to calling Google Nexus support and they agreed that issue is definitely not normal behavior. They are going to send me an RMA replacement. I hope my new unit is without any defects!

good luck, i am sure google will be able to resolve it. I was just hoping it could have been a calibration "feature"

Well Google just emailed me back... It looks like they are currently only processing warranty issues for people that purchased the tablet directly from the Play Store. I purchased mine through GameStop. Hopefully GameStop doesn't give me to much of a hassle when I try and get it swapped out.

I've read on some forumns that gamestop was telling people to process their returns through google.

Also I can't reproduce this issue at all so since someone else said they couldn't either I'm guessing it is possible this could be a defected device?

Got my N7 yesterday after work

My unit has the left side/portrait 'creaking' and the have to tap 3 times to activate commands issue. Very disappointing but I guess that's the prie you pay for Asus having to churn them out at a rate of knots to meet demand.

I'm going to register a warranty claim but will tell them I want to wait until the initial rush is over to help ensure I don't get a(nother) Friday afternoon/Monday morning unit.

On the very upside the battery life is fantastic. Used it for around 5 hours and the charge dropped to only 54%. That’s pretty impressive imo and a major plus for a mobile device.

Overall I'm happy with it but the build quality issues takes the gloss off a wee bit

My understanding is that Asus shipped direct to retailers (hence the in store availability prior to pre orders shipping) so it would make sense that the Play store wouldn't handle warranty replacements for B&M purchases. You could probably try contacting Asus if GameStop isn't cooperative.

agreed, but with my experience in having to RMA my Prime, do not expect return service to be quick. took them almost three weeks (and many calls) after they received it to get the new one shipped...and there repair facility is only in Texas.

I'm hoping Google does it like VZW, ship you a new device and have you ship the defective device back in the same box. Well, actually I'm hoping I don't need to return either of mine.

I've heard people say that on the forums. I've contacted Google to try and confirm because I have the loose screen issue. However, their customer service is extremely busy due to "an unusually high volume"
