NFC App on Nexus s

HI ,

Need a clarification from the android geeks about the NFC chip that has been installed with Nexus S. Can we further write apps to use the component for additional work....?

If yes, then how and what are the limitations.
Urgent and quick answers requested..!!

Hi,

The Android Developer website says that developers will be able to build apps that use the NFC chip in the Nexus S and future NFC-enabled Android 2.3 phones. At the moment the biggest limitation is that the software is read-only at the moment. The hardware in the Nexus S is read/write, and Gingerbread will be updated in the future to support read/write access (reportedly - Source).

The best place to look for detailed information about NFC is on the Android 2.3 platform page, which should give you a bit more than I can.

Hope that helps :)

From what I've read, the major reason for it being Read Only right now is due to security concerns. Obviously, you don't want someone to be able to walk up to you with a handheld NFC reader and get your credit card information. I think this could be easily remedied by having to open a specific app to put the chip in Write mode, but I'm not a developer, so I don't know if there are reasons why that can't be done.

Just read a story on phandroid this morning about Google acquiring a NFC start-up hopefully with the intention of making things like mobile payments more readily available in America. I personally am looking forward to what Google has in store for this tech, and the chip in the S is 2 way communication capable, it is only currently limited by software.
