Help Nighstand Clock

I hear lots of people talking about how they use their phone as a clock on their nightstand when they go to bed. I'm assuming this is done by opening the Clock app and tapping the screen to let it dim... or long-pressing the screen for the blue on black clock. My questions are:

1.- Does this shorten the life of your display?

2.- I can't seem to make it stay on... the screen dims and then turns off after the time I have set, so how do you make it operate as a nightstand clock if it turns off?

Remember there is a fourth mode - long-pressing while the screen is dim. This puts the clock in a 'screensaver' mode where it moves around. I don't use it as a clock (yet, thinking about it). But my 2 cents:

1) Yeah, it's probably not good for the display, but the effect should be minimal, especially in that fourth mode. Save for the 3 dots at the bottom which will burn-in.

2) Settings -> Developer Options -> Stay Awake (or use Tasker).

I use an app Bedside clock. It silences emails, text, vibrations, everything except phone calls. But has the ability to block phone calls as well. I can sleep comfy at night without worrying about notifications.

The phone has to be plugged in for it to stay on.

I use my phone as a nightstand clock every night. As long as the time moves around in screen saver mode (which it does), I do not foresee any negative effect on the display over the anticipated life of the phone.

I have used my phone as a nightstand clock since my BlackBerry days and have never had an issue with it affecting or shortening the life of the display.

I would assume they took that into consideration when desighning the clock. Just like the time moves around to keep from burning in the dots are so dim they probably would not cause a problem.

Interesting. What are people's thoughts on this? How much do you think the dots will affect the screen over prolonged use?

When I use my nightstand clock, it's NIGHT, therefore I use it in the dimmed mode. When used that way, the dots disappear - as they do when the screen saver comes on.

Everyone will have a varying opinion on this and that's fine... but I really have no concern about burn-in from the nightstand clock :)

I was going to post something on this. I have been using my phone as a bedside clock for the last few nights now and I like it. I just put the phone in no sound mode and it won't even vibrate when in that mode. Then I plug it into the charger and put it on the stand. I can set the alarm if I wish, but I like having it in black on blue using the clock application.

I have often wondered if there would be any screen burn in, but if this phone lasts me 2 years, I am ok with screen burn in at some level. This phone will not last forever, and I am sure there will be a better phone out in two years that will put this phone to shame.

Any issues with phone burn in for those of you who have done this for a long time? Anything to be concerned about?

I will look into a few other apps other than the stock app to see if those are better.

I have this thing call a "wrist watch" for checking the time at night. :P

Even on the dimmest settings, every phone I had in the past, it's still too bright. I like my bedroom nice and dark.
