No 3G = No data?

Hi Guys,

New Desire user here. Pretty impressed with the phone and apps so far. I've been messing mostly when connected to WiFi and have just taken the phone into work today. Guess what? No WiFI and no 3G coverage. I'm not getting any data services. The phone is in 2G/3G mode and getting no sync on mail,calendar and no access to the internet.

When I switch to 2G fixed then I pick up GPRS or Edge and I get a trickle of data down.

Do I have to manual put the phone into 2G to get data when there is no 3G coverage? In 3G mode I thought it would auto-magically negotiated down and still maintain the best data transfer it could manage. This seems a bit strange to me. Is this the way it works?

Are you perhaps on 3?

When you have no 3G it automatically roams to Orange for 2G (you get a little R next to the signal bars)

If you have data roaming switched off you will get no data.

Nope, I'm on Vodaphone so there should be no roaming issues.

Wee bump. Someone must have either experienced this or know for sure that the 3G configuration will drop down to edge on its own without being forced?

Check your APN settings are correct.

If you never get 3G, get a new SIM from your network.
