Help no 3g on virgin mobile

I recently gave my Mrs my old HTC desire which was orignally on the vodafone network, however the phone appears unlocked as any sim card works even calls on holiday in Vietnam with vietnmese sim cards worked fine.

Now I've done a factory reset on the phone and installed the virgin sim card calls are great wifi works well but no 3g? I've been on the phone to virgin tech support for hours but still no joy in getting the 3g to work.

I input apn settings manualy from the virgin web site:

Setting up the Device

1. On the device, tap the Menu icon.
2. Select Settings > Wireless & networks (or Wireless Controls) > Mobile networks > Access Point Names.
3. Press the Menu key and select New APN.
4. Select Name, enter Virgin Enhanced and tap OK.
5. Select APN, enter goto.virginmobile.uk and tap OK.
6. Select Proxy, enter 193.30.166.4 and tap OK.
7. Select Port, enter 8080 and tap OK.
8. Enter the user name and password listed below. If no value is listed, leave the field blank.
   • Username: user
   • Password:
9. Select APN type, enter default and tap OK.
10. Press the Menu key and select Save.
11. If necessary, tap Access Point Names then tap the radio button next to Virgin Enhanced to set the profile as default.
12. Press the Home key.
13. Tap the Menu icon.
14. Tap Browser (or All programs > Internet)
15. Press the Menu key and select More > Settings > Set home page.
16. Enter Virgin Portal and tap OK.

The settings are saved and the service is ready for use.
