No 4g In Phoenix Az? Really? and not coming anytime soon

I am in the coverage area but am not receiving a signal :(

dont know if this means anything

"CLEAR is growing fast and coverage is continually expanding. Our network covers this area, but we aren’t selling service here quite yet. "

when I had enough time to actually run a speed test without being disconnected the best I got was 1 mbps down and 0.4 up. Might as well stick with 3g

That sucks! However, I was in the the N. Phoenix area that has 4G coverage yesterday, And every speed test I ran got download speeds of well over 8 megs/sec.

I turned on my 4G around Broadway and Staply and got just over 9 mbps download. I had service until I pulled into my driveway around the southeast corner of Gilbert and Broadway... fml

I drove all around and got signal from broadway all the way to Alma School and I get signal around 10th drive in the Mesa Dr and Southern area and also around Horne and university. It would be nice to have at my house though...

Update, I work on Main St. near Gilbert Rd. in Mesa and the 4G works there if I am outside. As soon as I go in the building it turns off.

Come on Sprint, get this thing going!

I shouldnt complain all that much because 4g IS available in my area. Even though I am in a solid green area, reception is VERY poor to the point of being unusable. Oh well

Finally after all this time, a new green "blob" on the Clear map. Looks like its just along I-10 between the 101 & I-17. Any news on more expansion in Phoenix? It's been awfully quiet on here.

I saw that too, and got to test it. I will say it was working well and I pulled 8megs/sec down while doing 80MPH down the I-10. Now just EXPAND more asap!

I just checked the 4G coverage map again today.... There is another new green blob of 4G in south Phoenix (Ahwatukee). Two towers this week! Think something is starting to happen here in Phx?

I sure hope so Ben. At least get the area I'll be staying at this winter covered. :) I'm not going to hold by breath though. I got all excited last winter when they added towers.

Looks like after today's announcement, those of us with WiMax phones & no 4G coverage will remain that way until we upgrade to the LTE network when it rolls out. ::sigh:: I'm so glad I just bought a brand new WiMax phone. /sarcasm /faceinpalms

I'm already pissed off for waiting over a year for the promise of wimax in Phoenix and now we know it will not happen. I can't imagine anyone who just signed a new 2 year contract with a wimax device. I would go and return it right away on the basis that they are literally saying that a wimax device in Phoenix will be useless, at least the 4G part of it, which is the main reason why most people are buying a 4G phone. Also False advertisment because any 4G device on the sprint catalog right now, will never be able to be used as a 4G device in Phoenix. Anyone who reads this post, don't buy any Wimax device if you live in Phoenix, unless you get a written promise that they will give you an upgrade next year when LTE devices come out. Don't sign any 2 year contract with sprint because you will be stuck for 2 years with a "4G" device that you will not be able to use to take advantage of LTE, unless you travel to an area that has wimax coverage.

@jorgeix
I just signed my two year with the Evo3D here in Phoenix... =( I love my phone, but looks like I wont be getting "4G" for another two years =(

Guys, respectfully... stop your bitchin. Why does sprint going with LTE make your Wimax phones any less valuable? WiMax is the future of Wireless for cities and its not going anywhere. By the time LTE is fully operational Clearwire will have gotten tower rental agreements in order and WiMax will be decent everywhere and you'll all be clamoring for the new Evo LTE phone.

The whole reason we have no 4G in phoenix is not because of Sprint but because other tower owners don't want to rent space to Clearwire. Hopefully this changes soon but if it doesn't I don't care, even my roommates Thunderbolt doesn't have 4g all the time. Its not a big deal.

I live in a 4g area and I don't use it ever since I have a wifi internet connection.

Wimax is dead, they will probably keep implementing it where it's already running, but clearwire isn't going to spend a dime on expantion of it. They are also going to start building their own LTE network. Why is your wimax device less valuable, well because you won't be able to use the 4g feature unless you move to a place where there's service. The reason some of us are mad is because sprint promised 4G service to go with a their first 4g device and they did not deliver. I've used my evo in an area where there's 4G and it does make a huge difference, specially when sprints 3g is starting to get overly saturated and sometimes you can even watch a nice youtube video in higah quality. When I get a good signal I can get about 800kbps down, but most of the time is less, whereas in a wimax network I been able to get up to 7mbps down. huge difference when you use your phone for work and can't afford to wait forever for a file to download.

I just checked the coverage map. I work on the edge of that green blob but I'm not getting connected to the network. Maybe the map is being more generous than the actual coverage. I'll drive up the street later and try it.

Are all the green blobs on the clear.com coverage map WiMax 4g?

yes, all the single little light green circle ones are the protection sites that you will maybe get a connection to while outdoors or indoors close to the tower. all the clear deployed cities with dark green coverage are real released markets that should have indoor coverage.
