Help No audible text notifications while on call?

I am an Emergency Responder. We receive mass texts from the Roam Secure Network(RSAN). I was on a long business call and when I hung up I had several emergency text messages but I didn't hear anything when they came in a half hour before. There are no audible notifications at all when on a call. Not Email, facebook, texts, etc. I need to be able to hear these notifications while on a call but I can't figure it out for the Moto X. It just worked on the other phones that I've had.

Verizon tech support couldn't figure it out.

Moto Care says that this feature was disabled with the introduction of Active Display.

Can someone tell me how to turn it back on?

Is there an app that can do this?

Thank you,

-Mike

The Google+ Hangouts app update is rolling out. The latest version can be set to be the SMS/MMS message handler - it will prompt you after it's installed, or you can go into settings for the Hangouts app to turn on SMS support. I do not know if that app would sound notifications while on a call, though.

Do you have vibration for incoming texts turned on? If not, I wonder if the phone will vibrate on a new text while in a phone call?

That seems like a weird choice, and I wonder why that has anything to do with active notifications? I can see Facebook, email or other apps that depend on data to not sound notifications while on a call when your phone is not on LTE or WiFi, because while on a call you cannot get simultaneous 3G and voice, but I would think that text messages, which use the CDMA voice band, should be received in-call, and these apps should still be able to receive data on LTE or WiFi while in a call.

I noticed this also. For the vast majority of us it shouldn't be a huge deal, but for a first responder it would have to be a deal killer for sure. Hopefully Motorola is listening.
