Root No Backup Option in Hboot?

Brian Rubin

Android Enthusiast
Hey y'all, how are ya? Question. I was reading the Rooting for Dummies thread so I could do a manual NAND backup, and as it says in the instructions, I powered down, then powered on to go into HBoot by holding down the power and volume down button.

However, when I go into the recovery menu, there's no BACKUP option there as mentioned in the instructions. Why might this option be gone, and how do I get it back? I want to flash another ROM to my phone, but want to do a backup first. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

PS. If you're wondering why I'm not using ROM Manager, it's because it never seemed to work well on my phone, never backing up when requested, and the new version asks for access to my accounts, which I don't like, so I uninstalled it.

Are you rooted? Are you using Amon RA as your recovery? What options do you see when you boot into recovery? Can you give us a little more information please?

nand backup is in recovery, clockwork or ra recovery not hboot

I think he did go to recovery (or attempt) to, but just has some terms mixed up. Hboot is your boot loader; it's a white screen with colored menus. When you select the recovery option, what happens? Are you taken to a black screen with menus? If you're still at the white screen for some reason, you're still in hboot, which is the wrong place. If you're taken to recovery, what do you see at the top? Clockwork or Amon RA?

EDIT: Also, yeah, your phone *is* rooted, right?

Sorry guys for the lack of info. Yes, I am rooted and I'm using the stock ROM. When I go to the hboot (white screen, colored menus), I get the following options:

FASTBOOT
REVOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB

Going to the RECOVERY menu gives me the following options (still white screen, colored menus):

BOOTLOADER
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN

I don't honestly know what Amon Ra is, sorry. I had ClockwordMod installed with ROM Manager, but am not sure what to do with it.

Do you see S-OFF or S-ON in hboot? What's your hboot version, and what method did you use to root?

K, so I reinstalled ROM Manager, reflashed ClockworkMod Recovery, and it worked. I'm making a nandroid backup through ClockworkMod Recovery now. :) Thank you guys! :)

Since I wanna install CyanogenMod, should I do it through ROM Manager, or should I use ClockworkMod?

Some people have different thoughts on this, but I am partial to Amon Ra Recovery. It is similar to clockwork, in the way it looks and works, but has differences. It has been said that clockwork doesn't wipe davlik cache properly. Also, clockwork doesn't back up your RSA wimax keys, and if you ever lose them, and don't have a backup of them, your SOL for 4g every working again. You can flash amon RA right from ROM manager. If you decide to change to Amon, go into ROM manager, select "flash clockword mod recovery" again. After that, scroll down a bit and select "flash alternate recovery". This will flash Amon RA. You can always switch back and forth between the two using ROM manager, if you choose to. When I first started flashing ROMs, themes, kernels, etc (the beginning of my flashaholicism) i used clockwork, and sometimes my phone would get stuck in bootloops after flashing a kernel or something. I switched to Amon, as dozens had suggested to me, and never had an issue flashing anything again. To each his own though.
