Help No email notification when screen goes to sleep and locks

Hello,

New forum and android user here. I have searched but can not find a resolution to my problem. I have the LG Optimus V, and have my gmail email account sent up. When the device goes to sleep (screen powers down), I do not receive any visual or auditory notifications of an email. Anyone know if this a known issue with this phone, and is there a way to remedy it? Thanks ahead of time for the input.

At the home screen press the menu button and go to settings -> Wireless & networks -> Wi-Fi settings -> menu button -> Advanced -> Wi-Fi sleep policy -> Never
