Root no gps after root

Hello all,

I rooted a phone for my friend (and boss). We have not installed any rom, only debloated it lightly. It's been done about a month now. A few days ago, he decided to use his GPS for directions, and the navigation thing will not get a fix. I installed GPS Status & Tools, and it was showing no sats, so I went looking for instructions, finding the 2 links below and following their instructions:

DHD GPS issue fixed, 100% working - xda-developers
[Trick] Speed Up Satelite Fix for GPS on Android - xda-developers

Afterwards, we were able to get a fix for a few minutes, then he started tinkering with the gps status program and now it is getting no fixes again.

Any suggestions for fixing it at this point? He says he's had troubles with the GPS all along with this phone, so we're considering unrooting and returning the phone. If that's the best choice, could someone direct me to instructions for unrooting the phone?

Many thanks,
Byron

I had the same issue with my GPS when I rooted my Desire HD. I tried all sorts of stuff, but it was the second link you have posted that sorted it for me.

I did find though that it may not get a fix immediately using GPS status but, if I just went in to maps and told it to navigate to somewhere, I would get a fix and it would start working! Has your friend tried doing that... just go to maps and tell it to navigate to a destination and see what happens.

I know it sounds silly, as I was getting hung up on it not getting a fix but, as I said, it was able to get a fix and start acting as it should when I just tried it out one time.

well, we're able to get a few sats to show but not lock with the status app, and it just sits "searching for GPS" when navigating after doing as you describe. I think he's fed up with it, as he's had trouble with the GPS since the phone was new. I think he'd rather unroot it and exchange the phone. How do we go about that?

The unroot method differs slightly from phone to phone... I believe that the Inspire is the US version of the Desire HD though, so you could be in luck (as the DHD is my phone).

Was the phone carrier branded (loads of preinstalled, non removable apps and carrier logos when starting up) or was it unbranded?

Sorry for the long delay, i never saw this come in.

The phone is AT&T branded with tons of bloat. He's having more and more troubles, with lockups one after another requiring battery removal. He's had it, as soon as we can get it unrooted it's being exchanged.

I would recommend keeping the phone as it REALLY is a great phone and hardware.

I have a GREAT suggestion to get your Boss back interested in his phone again, Flash a custom ROM. Since hes used to using HTC sense(stock), I would start by getting him on a sense based ROM - My first choice for sense based roms is CoreDroid

Inform him that his apps will have to be redownloaded( i think once he sings into the market apps are automatically re-installed) and his settings will need to be set up again, but this will seem like a new phone and thats part of the fun, you will see him on his phone for the next few weeks playing with it. I promise, it never fails. Remind him if he agrees to the ROM he should go into settings->Accounts&Sync and select sync all before proceeding, this will ensure his contacts are restored.

You will need the latest HTC drivers and SYNC installed prior to these operations. Once installed youll need to uninstall HTC SYNC only, not the drivers.

1. Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to your (inspire) phone. The simplest method Ive found for a new user is to FOLLOW THIS GUIDE. Basically Install Rom Manager from the market, allow superuser permissions, click on flash ClockworkMod Recovery.

2. Download the latest CoreDroid release FOUND HERE or alternatively access that link by clicking on MultiDevices under ROM+ on the CoreDroid website.

3. Place that downloaded file on the root of the phones sd card by attaching USB and selecting the option to transfer files to sd card. A window on your desktop will open showing the sd card, from there select open folder, then find your CoreDroid download and drag and drop it there(not in any folders, but just on root- you will see a list of folders, your downloaded file should show below them with any other files on the root of the card.

4. Reboot into your CWM Recovery and backup your current config, using the volume rocker for up and down, find backup and restore - access this feature with the "menu" softkey(i believe, sorry i use touch recovery now) select backup and make a backup- WAIT for it to complete, then hit the back arrow soft key to back up to the home screen of CWM then Youll want to do what we DEVS call a triple wipe. From the top down in CWM click on wipe data factory reset, let it complete, then wipe cache, the go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache.

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTION TO INSTALL THE ROM

Reboot into your new phone! Sign into Google, then let the playing begin! ENJOY IT!

Your boss will find a whole new love for his phone with a custom rom that looks and feels stock, but BY FAR out performs stock. You will not have those trivial GPS issues anymore.

Hope this helps... and remember, it seems intimidating at first, but its actually very easy.

Well, they have replaced his phone with another inspire, and the GPS doesn't work on this one either. At this point, i don't think root+rom is the answer. there are 2 other folks in the office who have identical phones, none of them have functional GPS. His was the only one rooted. I think he's looking to get another phone and/or a new service provider at this point.

Sorry I never got back to you (from 5th March), but I have not been on here so much in the last couple of days.

It sounds like your boss has made his mind up on this, so doesn't need more info... if he changes his mind, then we can look at possibilities! :)

Try GPSfix, that locks mine on in about 10 sec or less most of the time.

Two other effective solutions are: 1) pull down your status bar & turn off GPS, then turn it back on or 2) exit navigation, then go back in.
