Help No incoming call ring on HTC HERO 2.1 update

i am not hearing my hero ring for incoming calls even though the ring volume is all the way up.
what can i do ?

i just get a missed call message on about half of my incoming calls. i cant see any pattern yet.
everything else works.
htc hero from carphone warehouse, on an orange account but not tied to orange. about one year old.
and very annoyed that it wont run froyo after only one year!
